Lately we have been developing a humble place to shoot with the goal of having a course of targets in an HFT style setup. 25 targets shot twice. There is also an area for punching paper, plinking at spinners, zeroing and in the near future we will try a 10 m pistol range too.
We aim to meet first Sunday of each month. There is a small range fee. Some for the landowner, and funds for target upkeep. There are a few of us already, as we are building our numbers again, but it would be great to see some new faces. It is just north of Otaki, so if anyone is interested PM me. Thanks Paul. |

this maybe a dumb question Paul, but how do the new government range laws affect us setting up airgun ranges?these new laws are going to shut down most firearms ranges and proberly the clubs that built them in the process, been wondering for a while if or how this is going to affect airgun club ranges or if the new laws will apply to them, there has been lot concern on some firearms forums because its going to leave a lot shooters with no where to shoot, the governments plan seems to be to make more gun owners who shoot on ranges only to give up shooting and reduce the number of guns in the community to the bare minimum,as there can be no other reason to shut down club ranges, just food for thought.
cheers mike

Yea, must admit I'm head in the sand about that. I doubt we would survive if that happens.
At this stage, we are mates in a field and avoid using the word range. |

Hi Paul,
Is this new club strict on formal HFT rules - or does it reflect true Hunting in the field? Eg:
I'm looking for a club that likes to emulate true hunting scenarios, not one that creates artificial rules! Thanks....

Hi Myson,
This gathering of ones with similar interests isn't strictly HFT or FT. The history behind us was founded in FT. A few of us still have our dedicated rigs. We have looked at HFT because the target set up crosses over. Anyone can shoot any style they want. seated, supported, etc. I would like to think that those of us that hunt with our airguns will find it quite an enjoyable challenge to successfully range and hit the killzone in the knockdown targets. We also have a zeroing, paper punching are too. We will have friendly competitions where similar compete with similar, so you can use whatever you like, but Those that follow the formal rules of HFT may well shoot next to, but wouldn't compete against someone that was using a range finder and is sitting supported. Targets are set at 50 m max. Zero range is about 70m, but on certain days we could alter things to stretch out to about 150 m. We are rising from the ashes of a perilously low time in airguning, so we want somewhere that all types can use. You are welcome to come along one day and see for yourself. This isn't the kind of place you will get stared at if you are new, even the resident sheep are friendly. |

Now that sounds like a good club to me!
I like the idea that all shooters can use their preferred MO's, styles and equipment with only Safety Rules applied. Excellent Paul! I'll PM you for details of venue, times, etc... Thanks for the information... I'll bring my shooting stick, range finder, etc.... Great fun!

Bit tounge in cheek but looking at the poorly worded act
shooting activities— (a) means activities that are carried out using a firearm or an airgun for the purpose of shooting at inanimate targets (whether fixed or moving); but (b) excludes— (i) paintball shooting; and (ii) airsoft shooting Would you get away with paint balls as targets. The definition of a club is a voluntary group of people. You could send all ppl interested a order to turn up for a shoot. Surely if its on a farm, and it land is still used for grazing, its not dedicated shooting range as its primary use is stock. |

the facts are that if government does manage to make it impossible for gun clubs to run ranges as they have long done, that lot more shooters will form groups and do exactly what Pauls mates are doing thats essentually under the radar of governments range laws,my mates and i been doing exactly the same for 30years on our mates farms,to sight our hunting rifles in or just have bit informal fun shooting etc,the only licenced range around here has been the local small bore clubs range and you cant shoot high powered hunting firearms in there anyway so make our own informal ranges to doso, ther lot of this goes on around here, and they cant really stop it either,i hang over my back fence and shoot out into the paddock here all the time with pretty much anything i want and the neighbours all do the same, like most rural farming areas most have firearms,so gunshots not exactly unusual around here and no one pays ant attention to gunshots, except the few new townies on their life style block we now have here, who get bit twitchy til they get used to it but some these people allso complain bout the country smells from farming too for a while, but if you want live in country this is just part farming and country life, you either accept that get used to it or move back into town eh,i just dont get what government is up to over shooting ranges,i tend to think its part their agenda to remove as many guns from public hands as possible by any means possible too, they just dont get it eh,making something illegal dosnt make something go away our road and drug laws prove that exactly eh,we all know how well those laws have worked out ,hasnt made our roads any saffer and certainly hasnt made drug use go away, this will work out exactly the same put everything under ground but nothing will change the way they want and expect it to,what changing shooting range laws will very certainly do is take away the safe well run shooting ranges so many use for no real benifit ,and as nz police use our ranges for most their firearms training, where exactly will nz police then do their firearms training eh bet they havnt thought of that one,the best saffest places for anyone to learn how to be safe and shoot has allways been properly run club shooting ranges, take that away opens whole new can of problems.
cheers mike

Joining a target shooting club is an excellent idea for any shooter / hunter. It gets you practicing for pinpoint accuracy, as well as the competitive environment gets your skill level up. Hopefully laws dont change this, as it will mean a lot of gatherings outside of the law, or a lot of club closure..
