Decided to upgrade a cheap $800 toolshed mill/drill i bought to give me a decent drill press having sold
my old mill some time ago i needed another, but being broke ather spending all my cash on new lathe tools decided to fit electronic scales n remote digital readouts on all three table axis as the machine had no measuring scales of any sort making it next to useless for any serious milling job,but being a tight ass didnt want to spend much on a $800 drill press,i found some dro units cheap @ 80 bucks each so figured worth a go eh!! Needed collets to hold tools for milling, drill chuck dispite being held in with a drawbar had too much runout to be much use for milling, but spindle only a 2mt bore, not easy size to get arbors, collets etc for but luckly ToolsNZ in Chistchuch carrys or will get 2mt stuff and at friendly prices too, prob chinese but worth a go,so ordered set metric collets to siut the 10mm drawbar,n see how they go,this guy allso has a 2mt arbor, boring head, n boring bars to suit for well under $200 so guna give this a go to. Had allready modified a digital vernier as a spindle dro,but have decided to fit a dro that matchs the others instead. Have some this gear on way,the rest still on ship i think,so will have wait til that gets here n get some on the way when it arrives. So guna be an interesting project, will be fitting first lot dro this weekend as well trying the collets out for runout,so got my fingers crossed it works out as planned, need get a camera as cant post pics. If this works out as planned will be cheap way for anyone to get a useable milling machine,as every thing very tight on this mill/drill cant see why it shouldnt turn out just fine, have done quite bit bassic milling on this machine, all turned out just fine and to tight tolerences so expecting once upgraded how i want will be a decent mill. Cheers Mike

I converted my mill with the digital scales some time ago. mine were the cheaper ones from machinery house. they were battery operated as well as dc power via an adapter to the mains outlet. they went okay for about half a day then started to jump around and not hold zero. they quickly ended up in the bin. what a waste of money those were. what brand name and model are yours? wouldnt mind getting a set that actually work!

just got some cheap hafco battery powered ones from mac house to bud,had no issuses as yet, they got
be very solidly mounted and covered to protect the electronics from oil, cutting fluid etc otherwise they all play up mate,i shrinkwrapped the sender units as well as completly covered the magnetic strips. Have seen evan very expenisive industral units play up if not protected,i guess just the luck the draw mate. I would sent em back to mac house, they garrenteed for a year and should replaced them for you. I been dealing mac house for lot years, never had any issuses with them replacing faulty gear. Didnt want spend much on the machine fitted mine to as is just a Toolshed $800 budget mill/drill i purchased for good drill press and really only wanted to see if could upgrade it a bit and see how it worked out as a small mill eh!! as i have got metric n imperial drawbar type collets, arbours etc for boring head, face mills etc that fit its 2mt spindle. Wasnt expecting too much from the cheap DROs etc,but so far they seem be holding up well, will let you kno how they hold up,but cant really see why they shouldnt,as really no diff to a long digital vernier when all said n done eh!! Cheers Mike

said would let you kno nunga on how the cheap dro units worked out,one spat dummy few days ago
now readout jumping around all over the place n wont hold zero etc, traced it back to batterys moving in out contact due to vibrations etc and eventually only getting intermitant contact etc,the other one still seems ok tho,but unfortunatly i broke the plug off being clumsy, so now dead. cant get replacement so going to slash out n buy good set heavy duty 240 system as as soon can afford to,so prob guna have sell something to doso. want fit set to lathe too now, prob guna cost 1200 to do both machines tho,so been trying sell my 22cal pcp pistol on nz forum,so far no interest tho,bit surprised bout lack interest considering pcp pistols seem to be basically banned imports due to our friends in nz police bassically making up the rules to suit themselves eh!!!!anyway pistol still for sale, open to realistic offers, pics n info on nz forum, this is a damned good n serious hunting pistol no lic required either. cheers mike

I am quite surprised they lasted as long as they did. mine packed up in no time. a total waste of money in my books.
Having said that i got my mill out of storage and its setup in the shed now. I noticed the gears sound very bad when its running so ill look into that this week as i am off work for the rest of the week due to a run in with a tree that took offense to been cut down and it stabbed me in the leg then broke off inside my leg....so it was off to hospital for surgery and lots of stitches...so needless to say ive got a little time on my hands now ha. |
