Decided to upgrade a cheap $800 toolshed mill/drill i bought to give me a decent drill press having sold
my old mill some time ago i needed another, but being broke ather spending all my cash on new lathe
tools decided to fit electronic scales n remote digital readouts on all three table axis as the machine had
no measuring scales of any sort making it next to useless for any serious milling job,but being a tight ass
didnt want to spend much on a $800 drill press,i found some dro units cheap @ 80 bucks each so figured
 worth a go eh!!
Needed collets to hold tools  for milling, drill chuck dispite being held in with a drawbar had too much
runout to be much use for milling, but spindle only a 2mt bore, not easy size to get arbors, collets etc for
but luckly ToolsNZ in Chistchuch carrys or will get 2mt stuff and at friendly prices too, prob chinese but
worth a go,so ordered set metric collets to siut the 10mm drawbar,n see how they go,this guy allso has
a 2mt arbor, boring head, n boring bars to suit for well under $200 so guna give this a go to.
Had allready modified a digital vernier as a spindle dro,but have decided to fit a dro that matchs the
 others instead.
Have some this gear on way,the rest still on ship i think,so will have wait til that gets here n get some
on the way when it arrives.
So guna be an interesting project, will be fitting first lot dro this weekend as well trying the collets out
for runout,so got my fingers crossed it works out as planned, need get a camera as cant post pics.
If this works out as planned will be cheap way for anyone to get a useable milling machine,as every
thing very tight on this mill/drill cant see why it shouldnt turn out just fine, have done quite bit
bassic milling on this machine, all turned out just fine and to tight tolerences so expecting once
upgraded how i want will be a decent mill.
 Cheers Mike

At $83 per axis was well worth it.

I converted my mill with the digital scales some time ago. mine were the cheaper ones from machinery house. they were battery operated as well as dc power via an adapter to the mains outlet.  they went okay for about half a day then started to jump around and not hold zero. they quickly ended up in the bin. what a waste of money those were. what brand name and model are yours? wouldnt mind getting a set that actually work!

just got some cheap hafco battery powered ones from mac house to bud,had no issuses as yet, they got
be very solidly mounted and covered to protect the electronics from oil, cutting fluid etc otherwise they
all play up mate,i shrinkwrapped the sender units as well as completly covered the magnetic strips.
Have seen evan very expenisive industral units play up if not protected,i guess just the luck the draw
mate. I would sent em back to mac house, they garrenteed for a year and should replaced them for you.
I been dealing mac house for lot years, never had any issuses with them replacing faulty gear.
Didnt want spend much on the machine fitted mine to as is just a Toolshed $800 budget mill/drill i
purchased for good drill press and really only wanted to see if could upgrade it a bit and see how it
worked out as a small mill eh!! as i have got metric n imperial drawbar type collets, arbours etc for
boring head, face mills etc that fit its 2mt spindle.
Wasnt expecting too much from the cheap DROs etc,but so far they seem be holding up well, will let you
kno how they hold up,but cant really see why they shouldnt,as really no diff to a long digital vernier
when all said n done eh!!
 Cheers Mike

said would let you kno nunga on how the cheap dro units worked out,one spat dummy few days ago
now readout jumping around all over the place n wont hold zero etc, traced it back to batterys moving
in out contact due to vibrations etc and eventually only getting intermitant contact etc,the other one
still seems ok tho,but unfortunatly i broke the plug off being clumsy, so now dead.
cant get replacement so going to slash out n buy good set heavy duty 240 system as as soon can
afford to,so prob guna have sell something to doso.
want fit set to lathe too now, prob guna cost 1200 to do both machines tho,so been trying sell my 22cal
pcp pistol on nz forum,so far no interest tho,bit surprised bout lack interest considering pcp pistols
seem to be basically banned imports due to our friends in nz police bassically making up the rules to
suit themselves eh!!!!anyway pistol still for sale, open to realistic offers, pics n info on nz forum, this is a damned good n serious hunting pistol no lic required either.
 cheers mike

I am quite surprised they lasted as long as they did. mine packed up in no time. a total waste of money in my books.

Having said that i got my mill out of storage and its setup in the shed now. I noticed the gears sound very bad when its running so ill look into that this week as i am off work for the rest of the week due to a run in with a tree that took offense to been cut down and it stabbed me in the leg then broke off inside my leg....so it was off to hospital for surgery and lots of stitches...so needless to say ive got a little time on my hands now ha.

bit tough bout the leg mate, hope getting better, just bought 3x axis set sino dros etc, cost $660 time
got here, but worth it,bloody awesume setup, only issuse being too damned accurate in readouts due
to going out to 10 thuo in,1000 mil etc,got ignore last 2 didgits on readout, otherwise very pleased with
them, proberly got more features than i will ever need,as got all the cnc programable features etc,
bit rediculous i guess putting this type setup on my machine but sure improves the measuring scales
thats for sure, got no excuses for getting measurements out now.
was it worth the cost??? possibly not to someone else, but to me,i am happy with wot i got for the money n i guess thats all that really matters.
allso just purchased full set er25 x2mt arboured collets for mill,a er25x 3mt collet chuck for lathe,
another er32x 3mt collet chuckn extra collets that continue from 16mm the er25 collets stop,up to
26 mm for the lathe,as going make a 5mt spindle arbour for headstock to suit 3mt er collet chucks
it give me the capablity use the collets at both ends the lathe, allso got a new live center with small
65mm 3 jaw chuck thats demounable, this will now give me a small 3 jaw chuck can allso use on the
rotary table, been spending bit on tooling lately,n still have 50mm boreing head n bars set on order
n still to arrive, got stop wanting more tooling once this arrives,as will then have all the tooling etc i
i need for lathe n mill ,have lost track wot been spent on lathe n milling tooling now,but gota be a lot
 more than i think eh!!
 cheers mike

You have been out shopping i see. Got some nice toys by the sounds of it. My run of bad luck continues with me been off work again within the first week of getting back. This time i caught some virus and was in bed a few days then it turnned nasty and i woke up in hospital hooked up to all these fun machines. They were testing me for meningitis and i can tell you that was not a nice feeling waiting for results of that. Thankfully that came back negative and im back at home now but still in bed but on the mend! Need to get out soon as i have a couple of guns here that need fixing.

jeppers man sounds like you having tough time, because my age n work injuries my health hasnt been
that good for many years,i just learnt how deal with it n get on with life eh!!,hope you dont get menijitus
bud that definatly not lot fun.
I spent too much on tooling n machinery over past couple years i reckon, should just bought more guns
eh!!you know wots like tho with machinery n tools if you love wot you can make with them, there allways
something else you want or think you mite someday n wen turns up cheap or on special etc,you know
how that ends, bit like guns, you can never have toooo many evan if you never use em.
Just decided would get the best tooling etc i could afford at time n over the years it sorta became a
project in its self,my wife would tell you its an obsession i am sure.
But tis nice to be able to machine pretty much anything i can fit on or in my machines, wen comes to
gun projectsi can make most things these days,my lathe n mill aint anything special, just chinese stuff
tho was carefully chosen to suit my needs n puposes and its proven to do just that,so am quite happy
with wot i have now,i guess in the end its not so much the tools that do the job eh!! but the man using
the tools that does the busseness.
Over the years i have seen some unbelievably well made guns built using some very bassic hand tools
by very patient men,but have allso seemn lot dangerous crap made by clever guys who should known
better too n bet you seen both as well.
I only had very bassic training as a general engineering apprentice bac in early 1070s,the rest i learnt
on the job by making mistakes n learning from them,i am bassiaclly mainly self taught as machinist
I consider myself a competent machist, not an expert by any means.
tho been repairing, modifying and at times building various types guns for allmost 40 years now,i am
not a gunsmith either having no training as one both maching and working on guns are just my
hobby, tho its been a hobby for long time.
I dont consider myself an expert on anything, but over time you can get quite good at doing things
you totally enjoy, but there allways something new to learn.
 cheers mike
