Hoping you experts can help me avoid a lot of googling...I have a HW80 that looks well worn and possibly quite old - it has the rounded front fore-stock and came with both .177 and .22 barrels and lot's of damaged screw heads. Am I right that the rounded fore-stock means it's maybe not so old?
Ron Young serviced it and says it's all good and it shoots straighter than anything I have had my hands on - but was grouping like a pack of 60s school girls going to see The Beatles. Absolutely rubbish results until I let the fore-stock go after over 50 years of shooting as me old Dad taught - with a firm grip on the fore-stock... Anyway my main question is - Is there any way I can tell how old it is? I'm looking to tidy it up, re-blue, maybe re varnish, likely sourcing some bloody expensive bolts etc - is there a better way than getting bits from the UK? Thanks in advance to you experts... |

Its a bit hard to tell how old something is without seeing it first. A photo would be handy.

Is there a serial number? That is the best way to tell the age.
What are the screws you're after? Are they the stock screws?

Just above the "typing box" where you type comments/replies/questions etc, there are a few icons, one looks like two white squares laid over one another, with a black arrow pointing up at 45deg.
Click on that and it will open up another window with another text box and the same text you have just been typing. Now above this text box you will see two squares with a picture of a tree in each, click on the right side one, with the little blue arrow over it, and it will open an up load window. |

Walk quietly, but carry a big stick.

Or just click on the "post Reply" button at the bottom left of the page or at the top left right under the topic title. Then click on the tree icon

The serial number is normally located on the flat part of the barrel where the pin attaches it to the compression chamber. But since that comes with two barrels there is a good change its not there. or if it is, both barrels should have the same numbers on. Or directly above the trigger on the compression tube.

I love older guns like this.
Maybe serial number is on the action. Might need to take stock off to find it.

I found it. Underside of barrel just in front of the forestock... I blame my old eyes and the fact that while this rifle shoots great, it is in urgent need of some cosmetic TLC, especially the barrel.
Nothing on the .177 extra barrel so I guess it was bought as an extra but it does have the same markings apart from being 4.5... Serial No. : 949466 ![]() |
