Just for your information... I'm wanting to import a target PCP air pistol (.177 cal).
Asked the FSA what's needed. Their reply... "In response to your question ‘Do I need a pistol endorsement to own and use the PCP target air pistol?’ - a PCP air pistol and air pistol are both considered a restricted airgun which require a a permit to import with a special reason provided and, the applicant is not required to hold a firearm licence. However- a PCP air rifle would be considered a specially dangerous airgun pursuant to section 2 of the Arms Act 1983 and as such a permit to import with a special reason provided and, the applicant is required to hold a current firearm licence". I'm a bit surprised about no FAL needed for a PCP air pistol (although target grade pistols are not a high power thing). |

British air pistols are generally 6 ft/lbs or less which is sufficient for 10 metre targets.
Even without FAL requirement they remain difficult to import hence the rising value of quality pre-owned units.

Yes, too true. It may help that I'm in a TSNZ associated club. I already know what I want... There is new version due in October, so I will wait. On that note...how many folks in NZ have even heard of Precihole? They are a big player in India and apparently make some really good gear. |

I applied recently to import a PCP pistol but my application was denied even though it was a single shot model which I intended to use at our local range. My appeal was declined and my complaint to the PCA got zero traction. An appeal though the courts was an option but this was going to cost me an estimated $1500-$2000 for a gun that was going to cost $700 landed. My reading of the situation is that because PCP pistols don't require an FAL to own in NZ (currently), our enforcement agency uses the import permit system as a means to control and limit the number in circulation. That is not to say that you won't succeed with an application, but I have my doubts as the main airgun retailer here tells me that he is unable to get a permit to import multi-shot CO2 pistols. That said, I have previously imported three PCP rifles and have another sitting in Customs currently. Of course, all of these have been added to the Firearms Register so they know where they are. Re the Precihole, I understand they are an Indian made product that have been taken up by Air Arms in the UK as their lower priced offering. The pistol I wanted to import was an Artemis made by SPA, as are a lot of this type of products these days, often the same guns marketed under different brand names. I have a Diana Outlaw .22 which is made by Snow Peak Airguns and it performs very creditably. Have you tried contacting Magair in the Waikato? They sell a range of PCP target pistols (Steyr from memory). |

I have looked at the Magair site, and yes...Steyr. Can't afford a Steyr at the moment. I've been offered a Coltri compressor which I think I will grab (I have a few fellow club members who are now looking at air guns instead of rimfire for our BR. Will be needing extra air to help them out for a while). Will flick off my GX CS4i then and that will help rebuild the funds! I'd like to keep the CS4i as a back up, but living in a retirement unit there is not a lot of spare space. I'll put it up on here once I reach the requirements for Buy/Sell.

The Coltri looks good.
Have you found the CS4i good? I have one of those and a first gen Airbow as a back up. The CS4i has been really good for me with no issues at all. |

Yes, CS4i is good. Easily tops up my tiny 220cc cylinder on the 9015. The water cooling was what made me buy it, plus good reviews online. The only maintenance ever needed is to clean the check valve now and then. But the Coltri is too good to pass up. |

Police FA control has a lot of inconsistent madness - if they want to control the pistols then put them on a FAL. I'm not saying they should make everything restricted to FAL holders at all, but I am saying don't use an arbitrary "NO!" decision to not issue permits to stop legitimate law-abiding Kiwis from having fun.
Seems a lot like the fee because I let my "lifetime" FAL expire while shifting around a lot so they couldn't track me - or didn't try hard enough...then they charge me literally double the fee to re-sit the FAL quiz/vetting etc Yes that's double what a new applicant would cost and that's before the Chch maniac and new system. Me to the cop telling me this bad news: "So you are going to charge double to me who has had a FAL for over 40 years without issue?" Cop said "Yes" Me: "Why?" Cop: "Because you have possessed FAs without a licence." Me; "Not after I knew - I immediately put them in the secure storage with my brother who has a current FAL."" Pause. Me: "So you are charging me an arbitrary penalty for which I have no easy legal recourse, even though you know I have safely used and possessed firearms for much of my life?" Cop: " I wouldn't say that." Me lives in a small town so I sure as hell don't want to fall out with the local (then) FA Officer Cop so I shut the fcuk up and didn't suggest that the fee I had to pay seemed a lot like facism to me or similarly kick up a stink but I really wanted to to. But it does seem to me that we air-gun and FA enthusiasts are under attack for all of the wrong reasons - mainly because of TV and movies and gun abuse in the U.S. even though each and every bad FA maniac killer incident in NZ was committed with military man-killers that in my view should never have been let in the country anyway because they attract the wrong people and are useless for anything but posers and killers. A Ruger 10/22 can do anything an AK47 can do for target shooters. Except deer cullers operating from helicopters way back when a semi-auto larger caliber rifle may have been the best for the job - I'd be OK with them getting special permits to use and possess. But instead we flooded the country with weapons designed to kill and maim humans where bolt action larger caliber rifles are much better for all legal purposes and now law-abiding gun users are paying the price. There are a lot of seemingly arbitrary decisions being made to punish or restrict the law-abiding because there is zero evidence the too heavy-handed FA legislation is going to help public safety. But it seems that it is now politically incorrect to use barrel driven projectiles in NZ and for that reason resistance is probably futile. Slightly irrelevant rant over. Sorry team - I just can't help myself. Illogical PC madness drives me crazy. :-) Edited by JasonEdward - 4 hours 22 minutes ago at 6:38pm |
