What are you shooting in the deep south ticks? Too cold for possums? Another Northerner here

30 minutes from Invercargill going west na heaps of possum down here and the are really fluffy in winter making it easy to get plenty of furr I actually shot 3 in my backyard with my old crossman mag extra only 10 mtrs away it did kill them with a head shot but I didn't really like that gun at all so I got rid of it my vaporizer seems a lot more powerful than the mag extra and is far more accurate even after only 50 odd rounds the mag extra took 500 rounds before getting anywhere near accurate

Tend to be darker down south which gets a better price too. Further north you go the lighter and less dense the fur.
Think it was around 95 bucks for machine plucked and 90 bucks for hand plucked per kg end of year before last

Hand plucked down here was close to 140 a kg a couple of years ago but I was using a.223 back then I had to head shot with that if I wanted to pluck them because a body shot made too much mess of the fur 😂

Unfortunately when I left my ex I had to hand in my firearms license because she told the cops she was scared of me although there was absolutely no basis to warrant her saying that she did it just to hurt me she even kept my pig dog saying that it was hers I couldn't do a thing at all the cops take the female side straight away in those types of things

They use any excuse to take a fal.
Those fur were prices up north so im not suprised you were getting more down there.
The difference in colour and fur quality is pretty significant

The quality of the fur down here is pretty good alright you can see why they use it for stuff it's so bloody soft and not itchy like wool I can't believe that it's not more widely used and harvested I mean the are nothing but a pest and no use for anything else I got in the crap years ago in Aussie I was on holiday and saw one on the bird feeder so I grabbed it by the tail and put it down I didn't know that they are protected over there 😂 and yeah I had my fal for 22 years I had never been in trouble for anything at all with the cops I had really good solid reference from a few people but I didn't have a chance and I actually have to say that if some of the springer on the market now do the fps that they say it's more fps than a low velocity.22 and more fps than an average pcp yet you have to have a fal for them to and let face it guns don't kill people any more than a spoon make you fat it is the person who is holding it that is the problem and tbh the only people who don't have a gun without a license is the honest people it's like a lock on a door that won't stop a crim it will only stop the honest people

Get over the high fps.
High fps is going to give you more recoil and be harder to keep gun accurate. ( Look up springer recoil theres a lot happening before that pellet leaves the barrel and if you've been shooting powder burners your probly underestimating how much it affects it. It will seem like nothing compared to a lr but it really does affect it. Kills non airgun scopes too)
Theres also the transonic flight that affects flight as they near the 950 fps to over a 1000fps.
Heres the figures i got a couple of weeks back from chrono and chair gun.
I use 5fpe at target for my standard for a kill shot on hare and 6fpe for possum at target .
Thats my own personal guide lines that im comfortable with .

                        Muzzle 90y
18.13gr    636fps    16.2fpe    8.95
16gr       659fps     15.5fpe   3.70
14.66gr   705fps     16.2 fpe   5.31
Muzzle and 90yards keep centering so first is muzzle fpe and second with no fpe is 90 yards

Cheers I have been learning about the recoil and stuff that a Springer does compared to powder and how to hold a Springer compared to powder it's a little hard to break the habit of holding it tight like a powder I'm not concerned about the fps really I was just trying to use it as a comparison I'm a bearing engineer so also well aware of the affect of the approaching the sound barrier and it's affects on a projectile bit like a "dome" shaped front is more stable in the air as a pose to a pointed tip bit like the mass of the projectile being more important for a kill than the fps I would have gone with a.17 if I was really wanting fps but even though they are higher than a .22 having less mass makes them less affective than a .22 but I do appreciate you giving me advice I work on the theory that if I don't know what someone else does know I will listen and learn rather than forming my own opinion on what I think I know my 7mm was a bit more accurate with a slower projectile then the faster ammo I am am surprised tho at just how different springers behave then powder it's just a practice thing I guess bit like anything in life the more information you know and the more practice you do makes you better and it's the smaller details that you pay attention to that makes the most difference

If your not aware of this guy check him out.
https://m.youtube.com/@AirArmsHuntingSA
He has really good info on a lot of air gun subjects.
Youll have to search through the site as theres a lot of the usual look at me shoot videos but has some fantastic ballistic and pellet flight videos, scope etc.
Teds holdover is another good site that has gems of info.
