Besides the immortal beer can, what do you folks use for your favorite plinking targets?

Any home made specials, targets that have lasted for ever, cheap and nastys, or very good value for money plinking targets you have to show and share?

I made these from scrap metal found on the farm a few years ago. They worked like a bomb, many hours of fun.
Unfortunately I dont have them anymore.

But I did make these today. The little 15mm ones will be good practise for ratting at 15m, the 25mm good for rabbit practise at 30m, and I have two 40mm ones I’m still finishing.

I like shooting spinner targets, they make a good sound.

I used to enjoy shooting FT before the govt changed the rules making it very hard, but I do enjoy shooting knock over targets. Typically they have a string to pull them back up, but I had made a remote control restting one, so I only had to push a button, and they reset.

Remote control 😂 I like that.

I like targets that give you an immediate reaction and also deflect the pellet down, just makes sence from a saftey point of view 👍🏻
I also like targets that “reset” them selves with just a bit of gravity, can take shot after shot, and will hopefully last for years.

I finished the bigger swinging target today, and also made some “place anywhere and quickly” bases for a few other swinging targets.

Doing a quick cost comparison of the home made targets vs the store bought ones.

Homemade.
Bought the 6 little swinging targets (metal disks) from trade me for $20.
Bought M4 nuts, blots and washers $30
Wood for free from Miter10 off cuts bin.
A few wood screws I had already.
Total cost $50 for 3 targets, each with 2 swingers.
Expected life span, 2 years???

Store bought.
$35 for a premade swinger target from hunting and fishing.
A few wood screws I had already.
Wood for free from Miter10 off cuts box.
Total cost $35 for one target with 3 or 4 swingers.
Expected life span, 5 years???

Seems the store bought ones might end up being the better value for money in the long run 🤔

I know there are cheaper “re-settable” swinging targets for sale on trade me for $16-$20, but I have my doubts about the thickness of the little metal disks. I’ve had cheep ones before and the disks just dent and bend even when hit with a sub12fpe .177 🤔 and then u still need to pay $15 for shipping, which ringed u up to about the same price as a decent one from h&f, so so far I haven’t been brave enough to try the cheep trade me ones…

Nice stuff Pete.

Here's a video of the remote resetting target I made a while ago.

I've tested them out to 60m without any issue. They can be placed in one spot and as long as you have the remote you're all set.

Remington's, you reset by shooting the lower paddle. I have several that live outdoors and they just need a touch of oil occasionally.

I will get a pic of them setup, slightly more of a challenge to reset than drop.

Ok for 20ft/lbs when out at 25 yards.

Far out these targets are awesome!  I wish we had an Air Rifle club somewhere where we could go like they do in the UK and the states.  I'd pay to be a member of a club that had such facities.

There is the keene range in Petone. Airguns can go on a Wed night. It's a small bore range, so none of theses style targets though.

Unfortunately the new regs killed off Wgtns airgun club.

These knockovers won't last too long with a 30 ft/pd airgun though, they slowly misshape.

Cheers Pauly. But if I join Petone I think I have to compete and have one of their competition rifles don’t I? I’ll ask them again as I’m sure the guy told me they don’t when I had a shoot down their last year testing out the 22 club

Yes please that would be awesome.  Unsure I have the money to do it but with crowd funding and talking to the right people on here perhaps it could be made to work.  thank you much appreciated.

If I win th.. no wait, When I win the lotto, I'm building an 100m long concrete walled building and making an AWESOME indoor shooting range, which will be 22deg all year round, luxury shooting benches, good lighting, and ranges from 5m to 100m...

I've started making some plaster of paris targets as shown bellow

have only tried the astronaut rabbit, soldier and large "Lego man" ones so far - mostly with my 177 pistol which does break them up pretty well.  Usually get a few pieces I can reuse which can get quite challenging to hit.  The larger ones should be good with the 30 cal!  Also bought a roll of splash targets I mostly use for my pistol with a light duty pellet trap I have.

I also have a number of spinner targets I must make up stands for too.

I wish there was a way to like message in this forum lol. I’ve always thought about doing the same thing. That’s literally all it would take is someone wealthy to do it. I’m not wealthy but I’d defiantly contribute money and my time to help something like this kick off.

Sick man! They must be a lot of fun to shoot. I bet they explode wouldn’t they?
I’d like to be able to shoot my old matchbox cars to make them look like they’ve been in a crash/war zone shoot out. But can’t really put them on the range I shoot st I don’t believe.

All set to test out some targets - closest is 10m next is 15, then 20 with the last ones at 30. Keen to see what the 30cal can do to the plaster of paris ones at 20m

So ...

the closest target was a bit of a a fail - hitting any of the "hanging"  disks tangled them up so they did not "reset" though they did survive hits from the 30 cal.   The spinner on the right side is fine and coped OK with hits from the 30 cal.

The 30 cal vaporised a "soldiers" at 15m  though did leave the feet intact that can be used as a much smaller target.  The 22 left both the feet and head intact so I got two smaller targets for that one.

The large "Lego man" left 3 smaller pieces after being hit by the 30 cal and the gnome 2 so not too bad.  the smaller bits are more of a challenge to hit.  The spinner at 20m is good though one of the  targets is a bit bent after a hit on the top of the disk where it joins the hanger.

Overall a success.

What a cool set up. I’m officially jealous of the yard size to be able to sent that up. Wish I could buy a strip of land just to plink in

I'm lucky to live on a 5 acre life sentence block in a tiny home/granny flat with my daughter, son-in-law and grandson in an old farm house across the fence.  The nearest neighbour's house is over mile away and he's half deaf anyway - so noise is not an issue.   Mind you it will get quite noisy soon once the roar starts.

Lol. Nice. What a great setup. My inlaws are immigrating here from South Africa in the next two years. If they get the health clearance we will need to buy a new house where we can drop granny flat/tiny home on it. I said that’s fine on the condition it’s on a lifestyle block with a shooting range out the back. Sure hope they pass the medical 😂
