Hi and welcome aboard. You'll get some sound advice from guys here. I'm constantly surprised at what gems of knowledge are stashed away in the grey matter of some of these guys.
Have no dought you can contribute in plenty of ways, hunting air rifle adventures always appeal to me personally.
Put up anything you find interesting I recon. You never know what little gems of knowledge you have, that you may be an insight for a member, but seem like nothing to you.
What you shooting air gun wise, how you enjoying them. What's your prefured shooting.
Great to have you here.

primarily ducks /geese,but willing to have a crack at anything .i do have a chinese  airirfle ,periodically do a spot of backyard target practise  but mayvbe not enough to get really proficient .Thays primarily why id like to recondition the 600s Gamo Ive got sitting here  in pieces .It is a bit of a brute.Im looking for a spring that smooths out the safety operation ,but its proving a bit of a task.Id also like to tune that up a little so Illbe willingly seeking advice from you guys on here as youve obviously got a lot of knowledge etc on these beasties.

It came to me in parts via my sons cobber .he also presented the mangled safety spring which to put it bluntly was munted! the rest looks Ok to my eye altho an experiencewd shooters eyeball mk1 over the piston etc would be much appreciated .the piston appears to be cupped with a leather washer???

Yep earlier ones were leather.
There's ppl here that are way more onto it than me.
But look up polishing a air gun cylinder. Polishing trigger. Polishing piston.
Crosman cylinder oil. What oils you can't use. Moly grease.
Can't help with spring.
Hopefully some with more knowledge will get back to you within a couple of days. But that should start heading you in right direction.
If you don't know the artillery hold principles look that up too, and why air gunners use it.
Right I'm off to try this sig out in the field.

Welcome from Taranaki.

I look forward to hearing what others think of early Gamo, the later models get a hard time.
I think they are all "harsh to operate" and if you have to invest in anything more than a seal it can be for little reward.

Chinese airgun with a reasonable trigger can do good work at targets and pest control.

Look forward to some pictures and interesting conversations.

Custom Seals Australia have some great kits.
Youngs Airgun Centre in Auckland almost always able to help.
NZ Gamo contact is Vaughan Sports.

Yea, was going to suggest custom seals in Australia. Of late, TinBum Tuning has put out a video on spring kits for some versions of Gamo's and they are selling good quality springs too, so it may be worth checking them out or even contacting Nick Stanning of TBT.

Some picture of the gun might yeild some good advice from others that might know it too.

Is that part number 1217 your talking about?
Looks like you can get a gas piston for it as well.

Nope saw that wrong it's just the piston
Here's a link on how to make a leather seal

look  just below  the plastic end cap on the butt end of the drawing -its that wee U shaped spring im after.

Posted By: kruzaroad
Date Posted: 04 Dec 2022 at 11:11am
That shouldn't be to hard to make.
It is part mum 1217.0 of you want to try and order one from vaughans.
I imagine it's not particually heavy spring. Might get away with making it out of thin mild steel wire and heat treating it. (heat it till metal starts to tinge blue and drop it old car oil to cool)

thamks billbob -much appreciated .guys -about to polish the chamber in this rifle .ok to use autosol polish on a mop with electric drill???though t id make a few 4x2gunpatch wads -put the stuff on and give it a spin.hope to smooth chamber out looks a bit rough and hence less wear on piston /seal.

Posted By: Billbobnz
Date Posted: 05 Dec 2022 at 7:24pm
I haven't polished the chamber before, I'm sure someone here has. I do remember seeing a video on YouTube of someone having a tour of FX airguns and they were polishing the chamber and barrel and testing between polishing to get the accuracy perfect. I keep it in the back of my head and will try sometime. I should try on my Hatsan .25cal

I used 2000 grit wet and dry on my gamo with no ill affect on fps.
Petrolium based stuff may leave behind a Residue that between the heat generated by the piston (its way up there) and the pressure generated causes an ignition of said substance
This causes uneven pressure over several plus shots, which at worst will
damage piston seal at best throw your point of impact off untill substance is burnt out.
Check the ingredients for petroleum/flammable products.
Watch how much you take off when polishing it. It is after all the seal chamber.
There are air gun friendly polishes, I'm a bit more number 8 wire.
There are oils specifically for oiling the chamber, you will need of these for when you oil the chamber and seal or molygrease.
My question would be how fine is autosol, if it has chemicals that are flammable do you have something to clean it out with, throughly, that doesn't have combustibles.
There ppl here who can give you more experianced advice when they read it.
You get the spring made?

This has some info and one guy uses autosol. Also has how long a leather piston takes to break in which is a bit of a shocker.

Wet and dry on a wooden dowel (broom handle) alternatively could use a brake cylinder hone.
Good thorough clean afterwards is what will be important.
Interested to know what difference polishing makes if any?
Slowly does it, do not create any heat whatever the process.

cheers

Sorry I read it wrong, thought you were going to polish the barrel! That's what I've seen FX do.

Polishing the piston chamber, yes I've used a dowel with emery paper, also used a very fine steel wool on the end of a extension bit on a drill (steel wool bits goes everywhere with this method)

It's not clear that polishing is a good thing. Manufactures like Weihrauch use a honed finish. So do hydraulic cylinders.

Am intending to use the old military trick of swabbing the "polished are a with boiling water vinegar-heat will dry metal and that should remove any residues.autosol is very fine -we used it in my Tfarmy days to remove crap and plastic sh*t off SLR gasplugs after using blank ammo or prolonged sessions on range.

I'm no export but also think polishing can be counter productive - honing a car cylinder or pneumatic ram actually produces small scratches that hold lubricant, where as a piston seal on a mirror finish would presumably wipe off the lubricant and make it run dry. If you do polish your compression tube please chrony before and after and share what impact it has so we can all learn something.

The level of polish is an interesting subject. I could see a high mirror shine actually increasing drag and heat, clearing the surface lubricant quicker. (speculation have not looked into it to deep)
Where as the wet dry would leave tiny scratches that the lube would fill.
If the seal actually pushes into them this would in theory actually create a larger surface contact area.
What is general difference you guys who are pulling rifles apart all the time, have seen between the brands?
Have any of you seen a mirror finish stock in a cylinder or is it usually just a high shine (if that)

polishing tends to over heat things and burn out piston seals very quickly

@nunga so how far would you go when touching up a cylinder. I. E light deburring, slight polish, leave alone etc. Would this vary from cheaper to top quality models?

latest guys .spoke to guy from J Vaugan .from serial nos he estimates the rifle was built late 1980s-mid 1990s.not sure if they had a spring in stock.anyhow today after muckin round ,Ive reassembled the  old girl safety is slightly sloppy but most important it works.
Ive mounted a redfield 4x scope i was given with my latest .22 gift and laser sighted the old girl. She does fire ,altho id say a new mainspring would be a goer in the future sometime.
Shell be ok for a spot of target prasctise though meanwhile. shes smoother than the chinese jobbie Ive also got -it barks like a demented pomeranian. thanks for all you excellent advice and heres to hoping i can reciprocate.
Merry Xmas and seasons best  to all of you.

Air gun rated scope? Springers kill scopes.
Great you've got it up and running. Throw a few pics.
I image a spring won't be hard to get.

I would leave it alone, not worth the risk, been there done that lol.

Polishing builds up friction very quickly on the piston seal as there is more surface area touching the seal, i would be looking to open the transfer port and polishing that to get a bit more power but again if you open it up to much you will end up losing power.

Spoke to guy at j vaughan &co.the main spring is tired too(30yrs old -lost temper),so I may renew both in the new year .mate is headed to wellington ,has offered to transport them for me. Itried my chinese special out earlier in the week-   its toey  and barks!!

I imagine a new spring and seal would do a heap of good for it.
Shouldn't be to much either.
So how acrrute was the Chinese gun.
I rember they brought one out years ago that was double Sprung.
Powerful, reasonably accurate. Got have a dozen shots on one.
Story I heard was it was made to get new troops in Chinese army use to firing and recoil.
They can make guns when they want to.

punched a hole through aluminium beer can full of water at 22m approx.its not exactly a crafted piece but typical rusky/chinese like my very early toz17.22rifle!!

There are air rifles out there that cost plenty that arnt exactly well built.
Toz rock! One of the best .22lr I've used. I love it.
Closely followed by a jw50, neither great builds but both are as accurate as and shoot flawlessly.
End of the day if you got a good shooter it's a good shooter.
What pellets you use in it?

Posted By: dropshort
Date Posted: 17 Dec 2022 at 9:22am
Lazer -.177 pointed pellets .Im not as clued up on assorted dynamics of pellets as you guys asre obviously ,but these things do everything i want.

Date Posted: 17 Dec 2022 at 1:12pm
Ive got 5 differnt brands of .177 pellets here, three I won't be using two I'm about to stock up on so can spare some, if you want to try a few other brands to see if they are more accurate.
Can send you about 30 of each.
Pellets can make all the difference, and it sux buying them to find out they're useless in your gun.
If your gamo is .22 I've got a few differnt weights and types I can send as well.
Pm me with your address if you want to try them.

greetings again guys -sorry for it taking so long to come back to you .anyhow -well ive got that old gamo going again  -however couldnt bloody find my exisaitng stock of pellets so off to H&Fand bought 25gamo heavy duty .177.problem jammed in gamo barrel on firng ,so spent this am giving it a bloody good clean -corrected problem.however they are too fat for my chinee jobbie. wont go near it.
anyone know if those old lazer pellets are still made and where i could source a box.

My guess would be the head size.
Had same issue with some gamo magnium in 22.( most I measured coming in at 5.53mm or 5.54mm out of a 5.52mm tin.
Can you see a head size on tin?
Try a tin of pellets with a 4.50mm head. Most tins seem to be 4.52mm.
GAMO make some pretty shocking pellets I'd stay away from them for a start.
Or get a vernier out and size the heads.

problem solved by visit to gunshop this am . guy fired a couple of gamo pellets from my tin through it,they went fine so seems Kruza youre on the money . Ive got a time of BSApellets as insurance .later in am condemned coke can was duly executed with resounding shots from both rifles! Ima happy wee camper again!
