Hey guys currently have a Gamo CFX .177gas piston and BSA Spitfire 10 shot .177 looking at getting more im hooked recently started hunting with my son 13 years old he is also hooked looking at the hatsan .30 cal for abit more punch in the future.

Love my CFX well worn in and since i upgraded seals and spring to a gas piston its been a very nice gun runs a 3-12-40 AO Artic fox scope Recently brought the BSA seems to have good power and not bad accuracy but already had to fix the loading mechanism as it wasnt seating the pellets correctly easy fix tho put about 300 pellets through it unfortunately things went down hill and lost all power so decided it was a good reason to upgrade to gas piston and better seals from Custom Air seals opened the gun up and sure enough seal was toast and gun was full of oil makes sense why it was dieseling so much found something in the compression chamber tho which id like some advise on looks like metal perhaps the cylinder was not machined properly i have some pictures i can post used a bore scope.

This is at the Transfer port end and there are dents in the piston seal from all this material

Welcome, disappointing about the BSA.
I have the .22 CFX and it is a firm favourite.
I will post a review of my .30 Hatsan, hard work but it does reward and is surprisingly accurate.

Yeah i have only really heard good things from BSA but from what i have read this is a rebranded Gamo im thinking i need to get someone to machine the transfer port end flat not sure if its weld or has it been brazed id say the first shot i put through would of killed the seal it was dieseiling and smoke was comeing out under the scope a fair bit

BSA GAMO are both owned by a large multi national corporation these days most Gamo pcps are made by BSA and very likely some BSA marked spring gas ram guns are now made by Gamo, both proberly produce componants for each other these days, thats the way these big corporations work these days, its all bout saving money to boost profits for shareholders not about building the best products anymore,BSA guns were allways far better than Gamos but merging the two manufacturers in the end will be to the detriment of BSA as build quality of BSA guns will go down and allready has as accounants and bean counters very rarely understand the produces their companys produce and couldnt care less a bout the products or those who buy and use them either, nothing good ever comes out these mergers, producing guns is a numbers game, the larger the company becomes the higher their costs become to pay for all the bean counters they employ,so they cut corners to save money and to boost share holders profits, the end result is product quality goes down.
when BSA/GAMO were independant stand alone companys their guns were much better than they are today, there was nothing wrong with early GAMO guns, ans BSA had allways produced top quality guns, but its not like that today thats for sure, the damage to your rifle is very likely due to poor machining and quality control, but may have been allso caused by oil in the tube from manufacturing etc,its allways a good idea to degrease new guns then lube them properly before firing particually with spring guns,i like to strip them these days as have found bitz metal left over from machining inside several brand name spring and pcp guns in recent years so i never assume any more things are as they should be with new guns,as for remachining and polishing your tube, proberly dosnt need remachining, just removing the junk will proberly sort it,then lube it again with the right lube and new seals is proberly all it needs,as there is lot heat produced inside the tube the gunk inside maybe hard and difficult to remove, sugest blocking the hole with wooden plug and trying petrol or brake cleaner to soften the gunk, this should get it out so you can check for any roughness or damage to tube,
hope that helps,if any machining needs be done that can be fun as it will be right at front of the tube where you cant see what is being machined and would likely require a long boring bar that will need to be well supported to prevent the tool chattering etc but hopefully wont need that.
 cheers mike

Hey thanks for the reply ill give brake cleaner a go and see if that loosens it up cheers

fricton from piston generates lot heat at front of tube and the dieselling proberly evan more heat and crud seems to end up being cooked on and can be a real bugger to remove, brake cleaner designed to remove baked on crud and seems work well on this prob.

Hello and welcome.

You can see on my post carbon barrel shroud to see what I've done with my BSA Spitfire. Have you ordered a gas ram from custom air seals for the BSA? I asked them for my spitfire and they said they had none that fitted that gun, could just get the Gamo one tho.

Hey guys yeah im talking to them currently about a gas ram and new seals very hard to find any info on these guns on the net  I would imagine aslong as you were not importing a complete gun perhaps the barrels you would be fine but i could be wrong

Just a update on they cylinder the material down the end was weld from when they attached the end to the air chamber i have ground most of it down took a verylong time as it was very hard hopeing for some good results .

Hey Billbobnz  so what i can work out from takeing measurements of seals and cylinders etc the spitfire is a rebranded gamo magnum custom air seals has all the parts for these i just orderd a new piston seal breach seal and gas ram i can let you know how i get on if you want ?

Thanks for that, yes please let me know the results. I have a ruger gas ram here that looks like it could fit but it may detune it slightly which I don't mind if the accuracy improves. I love the gun as it's very Ballanced to shoot but it's recoil has destroyed my hawke scope. I am actually going to attempt rebuilding the scope when time allows...... (Yep I'm nuts) hahaha

I had some time yesterday afternoon to pull the BSA and Ruger Air Hawke apart. The Gas ram from the Ruger is the same length as the BSA spring uncompressed. I need to machine a couple of spacers up to hold the gas ram central in the BSA and hopefully it all works. The Spring out of the BSA was under so much compression that it's all distorted which will be one of the causes of the nasty recoil. I'll keep you posted.

will follow this one with interest as i have an older BSA sporter here thats got real nasty recoil so bad i cant hit anything with it consistantly, this one is spring bound too, dont believe its the factory spring but a new spring fitted some where in its life,a gas ram conversion sounds like might be the solution for this rifle too, dont have much interest in springers these days but its a nice older rifle thats worth saving.
 cheers mike

Morning Mike, I'm just machining a couple of parts up to hold the gas ram in place and hopefully I can get it together over the weekend, will advise once completed.

Indeed the BSA Spitfire 10 is just a Gamo Maxxim with BSA branding, stock, but also the BSA cold hammer forged barrel which is very well regarded.

It should use the standard Gamo seal.

I have one on the way at a good price from trademe. I emailed Daisy (who control Gamo / BSA) and they dont have the manual or parts diagram. Its also not on the BSA website, but I think that just shows whats available to the UK market.

Hey yes i agree on the barrels mine is very well made no loose spots at all compared with my hatsan barrel :(  my measurements worked out that it was the magnum not the maxim but we will see once stuff turns up standad gamo seal is 25mm for most but the magnum is 29mm custom air seals do them which i have ordered.

Well Mike, I've got the gas ram from the Ruger into the BSA however...... The ram is 5mm too long so won't latch when you cock it... so going to have to source a Gamo donor ram

thanx for that, this rifle is an older super sport, loverly old rifle but been ruined by someone trying to up its power proberly, best way to descibe it as being violent to shoot it bassically trys to jump out of my hands when fired, rips scopes clean off the rail in very short time unless using steel scope rings its a real beast of a thing essentually unusable as it is,as Nunga said a gas ram will down power it and think thats what it needs, never did figure out why some try to turn springers into magnums as never seems to work out well and its unnecceary as well,11/12 fpe is fine in a 177 springer,if you want power pcps will give you that and with heavier pellets too so just dont see the point in trying to push a little 177 rifle over practical limits, when this rifle was fitted with new spring, pcps proberly were not around as its likely over 30 years or more older now but nice old rifle and worth saving and putting back into use as i dont have a 12fpe 177 rifle it will be a handy rifile to have.
 cheers mike

Another Hi from Christchurch.

I have made the move from firearms to airguns due to licencing issues... (Processes not losing my licence) and am looking for like minded people to get together from time to time to shoot and chat? are there any clubs who regularly meet up?

Hi,
and welcome. If your 13yr old lad is a 'good size' he should be OK, but I have the .25 cal Hatsan (same gas ram as a .30) and they are heavy to cock (40+lbs), and after a 'few' rounds you'll feel it. I did look at the .30, but decided on the .25 for two reasons.
 1) there are several youtube reviews of both, and the .25/.30 are pretty close for FPE and hitting power.
2) the .25 cal has a much greater selection of pellets available. I've used mine with 24gr slugs, and the heavy 42gr. (this produces similar muzzle velocity to the .30cal) I can attest at 40mtrs on a bunny, the .25 hits hard.
This review I found interesting, .30 vs .25

Hey Nunga that is not a bad idea there is a shooting range out mcleans island not sure who owns/runs it.

Hey Graywulf yeah he can cock the .30 but only a few times its more the weight of the gun that gets him but i have the Gamo cfx and Magnum which is better suited to him i just recently pulled the .30 apart cleaned all the sh*t out it was really dirty inside almost looked like rust bore is all good tho put new seals in and charged the gas ram up to 170 bar it really feels like its shooting alot harder now the factory seal was terrible the piston just fell out compared to the new one which was not easy to get in there haha but feels good now still waiting on my chrono to turn up and see what it is shooting at .

How do you recharge the hatsan? I have a hatsan .25 also. It is during perfectly at the moment so won't be doing any further work on it yet but would be good to know for the future?
