Hi all,
I am sure this is an old topic, but looking at what is available out there at the moment, pellet variety seem to favour .177 and most of the nicer guns are only available in .22. Is it just that the .177 guns are more popular and sold out? Or is .22 really 'better' in PCP guns?
I am probably going to be shooting paper and bottle tops mostly, but wouldn't like to have something completely unsuitable for hunting (birds, rats). Mostly just looking for a good general purpose PCP to have fun with...
Thanks! Sander

if you not going be hunting rabbits etc but just pests and targets a 177 will be just fine,it will take down rabbits just fine, most uk use 177 cal and at only 12fpe mate, botth very accurate, not really anything tween them in accuracy, both have huge range of pellets available,177 generally gives more shots per fill than 22 cal,but will allso depend some what on how powerful both are too,my 177 has 22fpe at muzzle and uses heavier pellets and gives bout same shot count as both my 24 and 35 fpe 22 cals, all give approx 30 shots at full power before they fall off the regulaters, bassically you pays your money and make your choice eh.177 pellets cost bout same for 500 as 250 22 cal pellets,so bit cheaper to run, sounds to me that a 177 be fine for your purposes, and even if only a 12fpe rifle,i would have no,hope that helps mate cheers mike hesitation hunting rabbits out to 50 yds with a 12 fpe 177 rifle, tho shots need be bit more precise than a 22,bassically head shots only with a 12 fpe 177

Thanks Mike,
I have suppressed .22 rimfire's for larger stuff, but keeping rats down around the compost bin, the rimfire would not be safe (or legal). So yes, I am leaning towards the .177.
Now it is just a case of finding one, and of course this is a bad time to be shopping, as nobody else seems to get it that airguns are essential service :)
Thanks for being the voice of reason, I was just overthinking it, as always!

I have no experience with pcp , but with springers I have a .177 and a .22 . I use the .22 for magpies and rabbits and the .177 for birds and its my backup rabbit gun ( Has the power to drop them ) . A .177 would be ideal for rats/mice.
Another option I have is a spring powered glock pistol , which drops rats/mice with suprising accuracy. A head shot or body shot penetrates and kills them.It fires plastic bbs and has the hop up feature.

Thanks Jusepy82,
I have had a few springers in .177 growing up, with have never been impressed with either the accuracy or the power, but technology must have improved since then :)
I may revisit the springer idea since I can't get hold of a PCP right now...
Thanks! Sander

When you get one probably best you stay away from the Gamo brand. They are pretty crap really and over priced

That may explain some of my challenges with springers :) I think this one is a Gamo, lemme check, yes, the Gamo Bone Collector. Borrowed it back from the boy...
If I remember correctly I fired a handful of pellets through it some years ago and then gave up and the boy took it over. Unfortunately there isn't too much choice right now.
I'll zero it again this pm and see how bad it is.
Thanks!

Hi guys. 177 sounds to be what you want. What's your budget? I know of a TX200 with top scope that I think is still for sale. One of the best springers you can get. Unfortunately Gamos are not the best despite all the marketing. You may have to try a few different types of pellets in it and find which one works, and if it is a powerful one, I would recommend heavy pellets like H&N barracuda, or JSB heavies. It could also be hold sensitive, so hold it the same each time in soft hands, and don't rest it on anything hard when firing. Keep us informed how you go.

Hi Paul,
I haven't really decided on a budget yet :) I was looking at a PCP, so the springer idea was really just to while away the afternoons till the shops open again.. That said, springers work out a lot cheaper once you add in scuba tanks and filling etc.
I am stuck in AKL for the 4 weeks, but will be back in Tawa one of these days and may be interested in the TX200.
In the meantime I shot the Gamo this pm. The scope is not the best (not an airgun scope, so doesn't focus down to airgun ranges), and I see what you mean by soft hands! I was trying to muscle down on it to stop the recoil and it did not like that at all. With reaaally soft hands I can get respectable groups, but still have the odd unexplained flyer.
But hey! I wanted a project :)
Thanks for all the help guys! Sander

I'm in Titahi Bay, so pretty close. After this madness, maybe we can meet and talk guns. The TX is in Otaki, so not too far.
