Hi all.  I am new to airgunning and enjoy reading all the info. that is posted.
I am fortunate to live in Otago near the Roxburgh dam, and am surrounded by orchards with lots of rabbitts.
I am an Ambo officer and have worked in ski patrol for many years [during winters]  The knees are now creaking ! , hence me taking up this hobby.
I have 2 cheap..ish guns but will look at selling them to upgrade a good quality one next year, in the meantime,  i  am serving my time gaining skills shooting at tin cans on a string @ 35 meters, and paper targets in a garden shed with an open door at 25 meters ,as well as a few rabbits!
Thanks for all your future posts.

Welcome on board Beanzz, shame about the knees but good to see they still work enough to cart you around after bunnies and tin cans :)
Some of the South Island shooters get me jealous with the amount of quarry they have on hand, it almost seems endless :)

Welcome Beanzz, nice to have you here. if you have any questions just ask! :)

Good idea shooting the cans on a string... (wondering why i never thought of that lol) beats walking 40+ meters each time to re-stack them :)

I'm a collector more than a shooter-always have been. The amazing mechanisms different makers devise to shoot missiles(and avoid infringing other people's patentsWink) never cease intrigue me.Airgun ephemera also pushes my buttons. Odd or unusual, new or old.I always have an eye out for rare airguns!
It is the BEST way to grow old,I reckon.Smile

Hi, was going to get a firearms licence, when I saw the price of ammunition I decided to get a slug gun instead. Best decision I've made in years, perhaps decades.

Got a refurbished Ruger Air Hawk in May, then a second hand Weihrauch HW97K .177 in July, and a Shooting Chrony Beta last week.

There's a .22 barrel for the Air Hawke coming from Mike Melick, along with a new spring, an assortment of top hats, guides and liners to experiment with different configurations, seals and shims, and a modded trigger.

Still deciding between Jim Macarri, Vortech, Welsh Willy or V-Mach for the 97. Just a one piece Nikko-Sterling scope mount for her so far, but that will get upgraded when I get a field target suitable scope.

I don't know if I'm saving any money, but I'm having one helluva good time.

cheers everybody

G'day I am a mad keen air gun hunter from Waitakere City in Auckland. I am a pest controller/fumigator by trade. I have been hunting and working with air guns for around 5 years now and absolutely love all things air gun related. I previously only had springers; a Gamo Shadow Sport .177 3-9x40, a Cometa Fusion Star Premier 3-9x42AO Gamo Viper Express and a Canon Super Pump up Pneumatic 3-9x40AO. Today I bought an Fx Monsoon .22 4-16x44AO Hawke Varmit scope Dive Bottle Charging kit Probe and a Bipod with an arm load of different pellets to try out to find what it likes. I hunt Rabbits mainly with the odd possum and birds for work (and play!). I am always shooting in interesting places for work such as Eden Park the Auckland Harbour Bridge and many more. I am always looking for new places to shoot and people to shoot with and share some of my shoots with(non-work). Looking forward to learning more and getting to know everyone.

Hi, I'm Grant. New to air guns. Have been a firearm owner / shooter / hunter - in the distant past.
(this is my second post !!   I poked my nose into the thread regarding conversion from spring powered air rifles - to gas ram power).

Very recently, I have been reading, and reading lots about various air rifles, and watching loads of Youtube videos as well. I don't own an air gun yet, but intend to buy one soon. I had a firearms license a long time ago, but let it lapse, and don't wish to bother getting another one. I'm not THAT interested any more.

From my reading, I have pretty much decided that a gas ram air rifle is a better option for accuracy, less recoil, and for being quiet.
However, I have been thinking, if I could get a reasonably priced springer (Hatsan's look to be reasonably priced ?) put a grunty air ram in it, and screw a silencer on the front end, I would have a reasonable possum slayer.
Just a thought.

The other options I have been considering is buying a nice gas ram rifle from USA, as the prices are a lot cheaper - from my Internet exploring any way, and the variety seems to be pretty good from places like the Airgundepot.
BUT  !!!!   what is the story on importing an air rifle ? What is needed ? Is an import cert. from the Police needed, and how hard are they to obtain ?
I think I read that customs duty is 15% gst, and import fees. That's to be expected and factored in to any possible purchase.
Has anyone had any experience with importing air rifles into N.Z., and the process to do so ?
Thanks.

I've covered a bit of ground for my second post !!  I'll shut up now   ;-))

Cheers,
Grant.

Welcome to the forums Grant, Hope you enjoy your time here with us! :)

Still a long way to go with my gas ram conversions. I just had a set back this after noon in my experiments. I scratched my main seal when putting the clearance groves the bearing :( now it doesnt hold pressure anymore so kind of buggered  that one up!

If you are after a possum slayer then i would go for a .22 over a .177.

Hatsan are ok but their triggers are not the best. My Hatsan stays in the gun safe 95% of the time now and i tend to use my gas rammed Crosman for most of the time but i must admit the Hatsan is a beast of a gun with a heap of power and when you learn to shoot it correctly it will give very good results.

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah I am still reading about various rifles, and watching video reviews. I take your advice on using .22
Which gas piston Crosman rifle are you using ?  As I mentioned, I want accuracy, and VERY QUIET !! I don't want to spook the neighbours !!
I've been looking at reviews of various gas / nitro piston rifles on Airgundepot and Pyramydair, and there are a few rifles that sound like they could be good. The main issue with reading any of the specs on the guns I'm interested in, is 'likely' BS manufacturer fps figures they put up. I am aware they quote for light weight alloy pellets, but even they seem to be exaggerated . . .

Do you know anything about XISICO air rifles ?  Just that a springer they have - the XS28M - sounds like quite a good bit of gear. Its apparently a clone of a RWS 350 Magnum .177 Some reviews of these XISICO rifles seem to be pretty positive.

I prefer to go the gas piston way, and would go ahead and buy one from the USA, if I knew what the process was with importing an air rifle - regarding the Police and Customs. Do you know the rules ?

If I have to buy locally, I'm not sure what to get. I have seen a Crosman Nitro Venom Dusk .22 in a local sporting goods store for $499. Young's advertise that rifle for $489. I thought that wasn't too bad, but I don't know a lot about them. They claim 950 FPS in .22 - but I doubt that would be even close with medium / heavy weight led pellets. Do you know anything about them ?

Cheers,
Grant.

I have a Benjamin Titan GP Nitro Piston .22, Got it from youngs. 950fps on the box and around $385 from memory

The RWS superdome 14.5gr comes out @ 755 high and low 750 which works out around 18pfe in this gun and It is good for smacking possums. ( as you can see in the hunting thread)

It needed some tweaking to get it up to standards but shoots real good now :)

That sounds like a pretty good deal for your Benjamin, and 750fps a good result - for dealing to possums.

I am intending to visit Young's later this week, so will see what they have got.

I quite like the specs of this Benjamin:

http://www.airgundepot.com/benjamin-trail-xl1100-air-rifle.html

The price wouldn't be too bad. Works out to be about NZ$468 for the rifle and shipping, and then the gst and customs fees which I worked out to be $109 - so that means it would cost NZ$577 all up.
Maybe not too bad for an "advertised" 1100 fps .22 gas piston model ?

Another one that interests me . . . and is quite a lot cheaper:

http://www.airgundepot.com/crosman-nitro-venom-dusk-air-rifle-22.html

It works out to be NZ$370 including shipping and all customs fees. At Young's they are currently $489 so that's a $120 saving if buying from airgundepot instead of Young's. However, I like to buy local when I can, so will see what they have.

I definitely like the idea of a .22 gas piston rifle. I'm going to head that way. I can't find any reason NOT to buy a gas piston model. Are there any ?

You mention "tweaking" that Benjamin of yours to get it up to scratch. What did you have to do ?

As I have said, I'm new to these things, but keen to learn.

Does Young's - or anyone else provide full tuning service ?

I have read that there are things that can be done to further tune a gas piston model. It seems that most rifles require fine tuning of the trigger, and sighting in a scope to your favourite pellets . . .

I'm not too technically minded, so would look for an expert to setup / tune whatever rifle I get.

I replaced the trigger, stock, and fitted a new scope. Stripped it down and gave it a good clean. and fitted a new seal.
