Well I've been lurking on this site for about 30mins now and have just taken the leap to register.
I like shooting air rifles and have an old BSA meteor in 0.22. It doesnt have much power and it cant shoot a pellet through an empty coke bottle at 12 metres. It might be ok for 10 metre shooting maybe?
Im hoping to learn lots from all the experienced shooters here.

Welcome. If it's any consolation coke bottles are pretty tough. There's lots you can do to tune your gun and bring it back to it's former glory and even better. Just google tuning an air rifle and read. If you like pulling things apart, figuring how they work you will have no problem. Wink

Thanks for the welcome.
I think I need to wear safety glasses as well as sometimes it rebounds back off the bottle towards me.
Would it be a good rifle for target field shooting (not sure of the name)?

Sounds perfect for field target and maybe even small game hunting!

I've got an old Ox spring I could sell you if you ever wanted the power for 100meter target shooting...

100meters might be too far. It has only got a 3x9 Gamo type scope on it, would that be ok for target field shooting?

You could always try a walther alutec, I've seen a guy shoot one of those pretty well :)

Once the illness sets in you can justify buying one of each type, possibly multiples. Then you can start on new scopes. Your future looks good young master Shaqa.

I'm certainly not an expert on everything but if you are keen on Field target you should try and hook up with one of the clubs and you will get to see what you like and even try other guns.
There's a club in W(h)anganui and one in Wellington. Wgtn range is on hold at the moment and there's a world champ competition taking place in September in Wellington, so plenty of opportunity to see some good gear and skills.
Do plenty of reading about rifles and maybe consider getting your FAL.

There are spring powered and pcp (pre charged pneumatic - air tank) to choose from.
Names such as Weirauch, Air arms, Styer, Walther, Daystate, FX and more. Check out Magair, Youngs air gun and others but that should keep you glued to the screen for a while.

Enjoy.

Good to see the masses are awake and switched on huh :)

Don't try and up sell him pauly, the BSA is probably so underpowered it'd be fine for 12ft/lb, you're just worried that he'd beat you with a 4x32 scope lol

Do you think a 4x32 scope is ok for target field shooting? I was thinking about getting a powerful scope something like a 12x or 16x

I can tell he has the skill to use a 12ft pound and not need excess power to hide behind. Tongue

I think that if you can knock over targets whatever you are using, it means it works. The higher powered scopes, 24x, 32x, 40x plus are used because they have a focus knob that is used for range finding to know how far away the target is.
I describe field target it as sniper golf.

Why do you need to find the range? I thought all targets are 25 meters

The targets are set from 8 to 50 metre or yards, some elevated.

I wouldnt worry about big scopes and stuff. What you really need is a big floppy hat with a ton of badges on it. Get one of those and you cant go wrong!

How about a cap with badges and a jacket with stitched patches sewn on?
