Right I just started on the Butt hooks for brett and myself.

I wanted to get some 25x25mm square bar but it was a bit expensive and you had to get it in 5meter lots so i decided to make it out of 30mm round after all i have a bit of this in the workshop anyway.

So first step is to mill the round bar square.

I decided to leave the forth corner for later as it would be easier to drill in the next step.

After the hole is drilled it is time to mill the top off.

Next mill the corners

Next i use my belt sander to clean it up.

So this is what i am up to so far. It is tea time and i will do some more tonight.

So far so good , will follow with interest

Ok did some more to it. I kind of mucked up on the drawing i did so this first one will be for the TX and i will give the next one to brett and co.

Anyway. Milled the sections out for the brackets to go.

Next machine up the shaft so i can tilt the hook.

As you can see this will give me the ability to tilt the hook left and right. I have got it sitting on the mounting plate blank which i will. mill slots into the end of the plate which will let me have further adjustments. I will then be able to adjust clock-wise and anti clock-wise as well

Next i will mill slots to take the cap screws which will secure the brackets.

So this is what it looks like so far. Time for a beer. Will do some more on it tomorrow.

Just stick some old yoga mat to the contact faces, drill the sliding rail and you're away laughing!

Also if you are able to set it up so that the heighing on the rail is easily adjustable you will find that useful for incline/decline shots.

Tools/ toys all good fun, but sometimes there's nothing like using your hands :)
I'm sure your missus would rather that than you using a mill on her lol :)

It had to start sooner or later with a topic involving butt hooks :)

Right, all together now only a few more holes to drill and tap. Will install it on the TX tomorrow and see how it feels.

Right done some more to it and i am happy with the way it looks now.

I milled some slots and stretched some orings over.

Next I drilled and tapped the locking screw hole to lock everything in place.

I have made it so all the screws are facing the same way so you can bolt it to the stock and adjust everything without having to take it apart to tighten screws like some designs I have seen.

You can adjust this clock wise, anti clock wise, tilt it left and right and move it up or down and you can move in and out.

Want +1
Looks the part, does everything, nice upgrade for any rifle.
Dead keen to have a try with it, but I think you've pretty much nailed what's needed to be done here in nz.
It seems all these parts are ex uk at present, which really pushes the end price up, with all the mucking around as well.
It's going to have such a good feel knowing that it's nz made to, not out worked to a factory in china.
Very nice, you should be proud

I have decided to replace the bottom jaw with a bar hook I had made my plans to have a bar hook at the bottom of it under the bottom jaw but when i was shooting it today i felt a little weird under my arm pit because of the width of the jaw. So i have come up with a new design. I started it this afternoon and will do some more on it later after tea. This bar will be made of alloy at this stage to test. Once i am happy with it i will make it out of Stainless steel.

It doesnt look like much at the moment and you may not know how it will go together but you will see later on tonight obce i have finished it what it will look like and how it will work.

Date Posted: 08 Jun 2014 at 8:34pm
Ok finished the hook now. I must say i think i nailed this, feels so much better and the rifle is way more stable. You can adjust the hook very well with 3 points of adjustment just on the hook so you can get it to the exact spot that feels good for you.

Here are some more pictures of the build. I can now start making them for resale and start on the 4 i have pre sold.

If anyone is interested in there they will be $160.00 with the hook.

Mean.
Fun to see the mix of designs and ideas from Steyr, MEC, our own heads haha.
I better order one to put on the FWB, although I'm not sure if I want to wings or a wing and a hook yet...

and maybe one with 2 wings instead of a hook for my slavia... :) but I'll confirm that one later.

I decided to make this smaller and more bits. Each part will fit each other, You can pick and choose between parts that will suit your needs :)

I decided to make the Jaws out of "T" section and mill it to suit. You may also notice my new collet chuck :)

Forgot to tell you all how it tested. It went very well and fitted nicely against the shoulder. the gun  was nice and balanced. Just need to finish the jaws off with some rubber rings and it is done.

oh yea i also forgot to say my finished item will have 316 stainless steel hook and main bar, which i ordered some lengths of 10mm and 12mm on Monday and hopefully they will get here today.

So i should be able to complete the orders i have on these by next weekend.

Posted By: nunga
Date Posted: 07 Aug 2014 at 11:45pm
Well finally made the base plate to how i like it. I have also replaced the alloy bar with 315 stainless steel this is much harder and does not mark like the alloy did when you tightened up the screws.

This new design is HEAPS better.

As you can see there is a lot more adjustment now and i have also re-done the top jaw with rubber inserts to stop it slipping. I will do the center plug tomorrow and have that looking good as well.

I was selling these for $170 each. but this new design has a lot more parts and machining involved so i will be selling these for $220 each. People that have per-ordered from me will still get these at $170 but any new orders will be at the new price.

That's looking quite nice now, and the price is still well under all the others, this will definitely level the playing field by allowing a more affordable, highly adjustable hook.
Spread the word :)

Did a handy little mod to my one, changed the Allen key for the up / down for a fitting that can be done by fingers :)

Also (not in pic) have put marks for sit/kneel/stand, saving time on setup for each position :)

Can the hook be taken off for fitting the rifle into a case by loosening off the adjustment knob?
you still doing these Nunga?

Mine was a tight fit if I left it on, but 9/10 times I was removing it anyway. Very easy on and off so caused no issue
