Can anyone please describe the basic procedure from start to finish on how to process a police mail-order form for an airgun regarding an internet sale.

In my case I purchased an air rifle from https://airrifle.co.nz and they emailed me a copy of the form with their details on it. I simply added my details and took it to the nearest police station in Dannevirke who verified my ID and forwarded to the arms officer at Palmerston North who then emailed the dealer approving the purchase and the dealer couriered the gun directly to me. I know some dealers will only send guns to another dealer who then charges you "handling fee".

As other dealers had told me they could only send a gun to another dealer and not directly to me I did go to the local police station and asked if this was the case before committing to the purchase.

Not sure how this works for a private person selling an air gun to another private person. I know of at lest one person selling a number of guns on TradeMe who is saying he will only send guns using Gun City which adds $100 over and above the actual courier fee. Of course this is not much use if the nearest gun city is over an hour away as it is in my case.

Your best bet is to go to the nearest police station and ask. Also depending on what you are buying, there may be another forum member who would be prepared to collect the gun for you and sort out getting it to you.

I've had 4 guns, tx200, weihrauch hw97,sig.asp20, crosman 1322 all courier delivery.
Àll springers or pump mind you.
Sent a springer through the post via post shop. The lady kept asking if it was a gun and I just said im not sending anything illegal and would say no more than that. She said it will be xrayed. I said go for it, im not sending anything illegal. It got there fine.
Pcp different rules.

For Gun city to do that is taking the piss. They possibly don't really want to be a courier pick up and drop off zone either so are deterring most from using them.

I would search for the Firearms dealer network. The shops or gunsmiths in that group will do this for a modest fee. I have a guy here in Wellington that will receive a gun and won't charge anything, and to send it charges only the cost of the courier.

The silly thing I have found is that if you ask a courier company, they say it's not in their policy to send guns, but the same company is the courier between dealers.

Hunting and Fishing will shaft you as well - $65 to ship , another $30 to release at the other end.

If your rifle is in the same island as your home address you are better to find another member who will collect on your behalf and then meet up and swap a box of beer for the air gun

Avoid Gun City and Hunting & Fishing if you can - go for the smaller shops.

I Used Hunting & Fishing Botany store as a receiver for a rifle transfer, and they charged an extra undisclosed $50 fee for me to uplift from the store. I wasn't told this when arranging the transfer!!
So the original $60 included arranging and booking the transfer, the cost of Aramex to collect - transit - offload, and then they wanted $50 just to hand it over... It was about 2 minutes, so $25 per minute.

Youngs airguns will charge the courier cost and receive on behalf for nothing. Im pretty sure thats the mindset of the smaller stores - to actually help the firearms community.

Procedure shipping rifles using the firearm dealer network from my experience (buying privately):

1. Buyer completes the police mail order form (you'll need the serial number from the firearm, seller's license details, name of sending firearm dealer, receiving firearm dealer etc)

2. Deliver the completed form in person to your local police station, police will check your FAL

3. Arms officer reviews the form and sends an approved copy to the seller via email

4. Deliver packaged rifle with a printed hard copy of the approved form to the sending dealer

5. Buyer is notified when the receiving dealer receives the firearm

6. Buyer collects the firearm from the receiving dealer after showing a copy of their FAL

I've only been charged to send, I've never had to pay to collect a rifle. I've used Hunting & Fishing to send and receive, Reloaders Onehunga (sending) and Gun City (receiving) but would stay clear of Gun City; the Napier store is okay as its privately owned, but the rest offer shocking customer service.

The process is straightforward, I wouldn't be put off sending or receiving. However prices for sending seem to be jumping up every time I send. Was $60 now as much as $85 and you have to package the firearm.
