In the event that you need to replace the leather piston seal/washer on an old springer this is how to go about it.
Fit the seal/washer onto the piston head. Trim the seal/washer leaving it slightly longer than the head so it compresses and forms a good seal ( when the airgun is fired). It also acts as a buffer so the piston doesn't slam into the transfer port of the cylinder. Soak the fitted seal in light oil for about 12 hours. At the end of 12 hours the leather seal/washer should have softened sufficiently to permit you to slide the piston into the compression cylinder. I hope this information is helpful. Cheers. Declan. |

Is useful info.
What sort of oil did you use? I imagine that soaking it in the wrong oil would run the risk of dieseling or possibly hardened edges and that leather preservers/softeners would be less than ideal. How thick is the seal. How wide is the piston body in comparison to the seal. Its something I've considered as a possible fix, if the world went too ick and replacements become hard to get. Oil - I’ve seen people use all sorts including Bisley silicon oil, Daisy chamber oil, 3 in 1 oil , neatsfoot oil, Crosman Pellgun oil, so it’s really up to personal choice as to what you use.
Sorry, the seal and piston are fitted so I can’t tell you the dimensions but it was a reasonably tight fit moving down the compression cylinder and just slightly wider than the piston. The seal was purchased from TW Chambers some time back. |
