Gents, have any of you hunted these Aussie critters in NZ at all,
is a .22 (air rifle) any good, obviously a head shot only as it seams they have a robust skin (i could be wrong) any one ?, Cheers---Mic

Personally, I'd consider a .22 magnum a minimum. I prefer to be over gunned, rather than wound an animal.

.22 air rifle would not have the power to kill with a head shot on that size animal. If you were to hunt them you should be going for chest shots with airgun not the head

I’ve only seen 3 or 4 wallaby’s on the north island, and they weren’t too big.
The one that I had a really good look at was a female with a Joey, (so was definatly an adult), that we shot while bow hunting. It was not much bigger than a possum. I would have been comfortable taking it with 25FPE or higher .22 air rifle, but nothing less. The .22 air rifle shooting 30gr slugs at 35FPE would have made short work of it. I believe there is a different species on South Island which gets to 3 or 4 times the size of the north island species. That of course would require a bit more oomph… Just my 2cents worth. Pete. |

Walk quietly, but carry a big stick.

There's a pic on site of 25cal taking wallaby. Anther on hunting and shooting site 25cal.
Though the paper work may put the energy up at kill fpe for the pellet, there is still pellet performance in thicker/denser tissue and thicker bone bone structure to put in the equation. Sometimes more weight is just better at pushing through. Id take experiance of someone shooting one over paper calculations and decide from there if you want to drop lower cal. |

Here is my wallaby taken with my Hatsan .25 cal
Shot at 10m right between the ears as it turned to run off. My Hatsan is putting out 29flbs at muzzle. If I was to do it again or use a .22 I would run H&N Hornets with the brass nose for extra penitration. Keep the max range at 10-15 or maybe 20m max and be sure of your POI ![]() |

Head shots or full frontal chest heart shots will be your only chance.
