My brother in law has a workshop that has a sparrow problem, so I said I would try sand find a good little gun to have there.
So does anyone have a low powered springer they are willing to part with?

Must be half decent accurate, and dove tail mounts for a scope. I was tempted to get him a youth rifle from Gun City, but the one I saw had a plastic breech, and I couldn't go there.

Even if the gun has potential but needs some work on it, I am happy to do that. PM me or text me on 0272469374

Thanks
Paul.

Haha, the Gamo viper express I had, I've sent to my brother in-law for the same reason. It's a great gun for in sheds without punchering through iron. Your youth rifle idea is perfect but don't go plastic. A Hatsan striker or something similar will be good

dont need much power to put sparrows and starlings down inside biuldings.2/3 fpe will do the job at the short distances inside buildings with flat nosed target pellets,i found domed pellets evan at that low velocity and fpe level can blow neat little holes thru tin roofs if missed the back stop,3/400fps plenty velocity.most youth type springers putting out approx 600fps and will easily blow holes in tin roofs,if you can find one the cheap pump up 177 rifles they work really well as only takes 2/3 pumps to get enough power to do job, they are recoiless and very quiet as well, trouble with youth type springers is they are putting out approx 600fps in 177,that velocity will blow neat little holes in tin roofs if back stop missed, velocity only needs be 3/350fps with 177,many co2 rifles and pistols run in this velocity in 177 and work well on sparrows/starlings etc and co2 guns can be easily reset to lower velocitys as well, the gamo shotgun works really well for this purpose but hard to find one now,and ammo bit expensive if you dont reload empty shells,we been shooting birds in supermarkets/warehouses for 20 years using co2 rifles and pistols and pcp target pistols for 20 years and found these work best with the pump up rifles and pistols allso working well ,just matter of finding what works for you i guess, but thats my two bobs worth for what its worth.
 cheers mike

Yes, it's a bit crazy that I can go out and buy a multitude of over powered magnum springers. There's a nice Walther lgr 10 m rifle on Trademe at the moment that would be great, but I was thinking he should get a CR600w air chief CO2. Even though it's in .22, still good.

have noticed too that low powered 177 guns seem becoming hard to get for some reason, you can down power a springer tho by fitting a much lighter spring i seem to remember some years ago fitting springs from a bsa or webley pistol into a small 177 cal springer boys rifle for indoor target shooting so my sons didnt destroy my garage door,i killed proberly hunderds of sparrows as a kid with my dads webley senior spring pistol around the chook house, missed lot too but certainly got plenty as well as you do when you a kid.my dad used one those older crosman 38cal co2 shotguns on sparrows and starlings with great success after wasting heaps 22lr shotshells trying to hit them before getting the co2 shotgun, been thinking on building a pcp small caliber shotgun pistol just for this purpose,or possibly a co2 2240 pistol with shotgun barrel for the gamo shotshells which i can reload,be piece cake to make a shotgun barrel for these shells, been wondering if choking a barrel for gamo shells would get them to pattern better,as not lot shot in them and it spreads out real fast in gamo shotguns leaving big holes in the pattern.food for thought here for sure.
 cheers mike

Mike, what about if I were to put a .177 barrel onto an Air Chief CO2, and have it low powered, maybe make the valve spring heavier, or reduce hammer spring tension?

Would that work well? It could be a good little project.

that should work well Paul,i dont mind co2 specially for the lower powered guns, bulk fill them if i can without messing with the gun or using the big bottles many do,easy enuf usually to make a custom co2 cylinder to just replace the disposable bottles that dosnt change the gun from factory, bulk filling great if you shoot a lot as reduces running costs significantly, specialy for those guns using the bigger 88gram disposable co2 bottles, which are expensive etc, dosnt matter to me if refillable co2 cylinders dont hold much more than the usual little 12gramers as long as can refill them shot counts remain the same or a little more, never did get why some hang rather large and heavy co2 cylanders off co2 airguns as they just totaly destroy the balance and  handling of a rifle and to me look bloody ugly as well, you idea sounds like a good one to me mate,as you proberly know i made two refillable co2 cylanders from empty 88gram used cylanders for my 177 gamo co2 extreme pump action co2 rifle,i allso made a 280cc hpa cylander for this rifle, that simply screws in and replaces the co2 cylanders, fifle can now use both co2 in refillable cylanders or hpa interchangably, gets 7.5fpe on co2 and 11.5fpe on hpa, handy to have both options on rifle and at two diffent power levels as well,i will eventually regulate the hpa cylander so can fill to 3000psi and set regultor to 1100psi,i like messing around with both c02 and hpa now with co2 guns, lot fun and both have their advantages, for indoor shooting sparrows etc co2 rifles or pistols work extremely well.

There is also the trusty Crosman 2250.. nice and compact, you could make a folding stock so it could be kept in a briefcase for transport or storage..
J S Airguns
Air Arms TX200('s)
Theoben Sirocco
HW77
FWB 300s
Webley Patriot
One or two others...
