If you looking at extreme long range and silly distances, projectile BC becomes King.
The good ol 308 can do it, BUT… a308 can’t compete with the 6.5creed or some of the 7mm’s when it comes to extreme long range. That extreme long range stuff never interested me much, but the more I get into “longer” air rifle stuff, the more I’d like to try some extreme long distance center fire stuff. |

And yes, before I save up for a brand new gun set up, an old .308, 7-08 or a .270 will do exactly what i need to put venny on the table

Air rifles will most likely do for me for small game. I will definitely get a 223 for wallabies. Im a little bit spoilt for access to private land and also a private gun range who the owner is into PRS shooting, so unfortunately yes I will go down the road of a rifle that will handle deer for meat and also for a range gun for out to 800ish m, looking closely at 6.5prc but got a lot of saving to do first.
Fantastic to see you on here Mintie |

Agreed Mintie, 22LR and 17HMR are both great, and both have their place, and there is nothing in NZ that a 308 cant do.

Gaining the FAL can def switch things up in the cabinet a bit! Exciting changes ahead but I have always found my fondness for airguns remains, even if I go months between picking them up.
.22lr is a fantastic cal, so is 17hmr. They both have different uses but are cals I wouldn't be without. For centrefire if it is just for meat gathering its hard to go past the trusty old .308 for its reliability and the ability to stop into any gun store and pick up ammo that will most likely shoot well for cheap, something you just don't get with a lot of the fad fashion cals about these days (my 6.5 Grendel only likes hand loads
). Don't get caught up in the hype of shooting out to 800m and different drop rates etc. I don't remember ever having to target an animal out past 300m and the .308 would have done all of the shots I have taken perfectly. |

Haha ive been told not to get a 22LR by the same person who said I can have his hahaha.
First purchase will be a decent rifle and set up for meat gathering. I think yes I would prefer to stay with air rifles/pcp for small game |

I am sure none of you all have missed me!
Sorry I have been slacking on the forum for the last year or more, or is it 2 years?? Life on the air gun front has been very quiet, my wife has been very ill since November 2023 and still having surgery etc and ive been doing alot more taxidermy work so the air guns have been very dusty!! I've finally got my FAL underway so the gun cabinet may start to look a bit different over the next few weeks. I will have a bit of a clean out of some old project air rifles if anyone is interested, ill take photos and upload them at some stage. Last weekend my son (now 10) out of the blue asks if he can shoot some targets! The trusty cr600 came out and we had a bit of fun out to 40m and even my daughter had a few shots. So here is the hope to more air gunning..... P.s. I tried to up load a couple of pics must they arnt loading... |
