Hi Folks,

Here is a little thread on pellet traps.
I've tried many and they all have their pros and cons.
Some are cheep, but dont usually last.
Some will stop a .22LR, but are very heavy.
Some are loud, some rust, some get shot out...

I've finally found a cheep, DIY pellet trap that is portable, quiet, stops everything and will probably last many years.

I've tried many cheep and nastys, but they dont last.
From a simple plank of wood, to thin sheet metal target card holders. They work but dont last.

I forked out $120 for the guncity heavy duty, .22LR rated target trap, and yes, it works and I have no doubt it will indeed stop a 120FPE .22LR bullet, but it is very loud and has a small gap in the back between the steel plates where pellets squeeze through and end up all over the floor or garden.
I filled the gap with steel putty, but it eventually gets shot out. I lined the inside with carpet tiles, but you shoot through them quickly and its back to pellets onto the loud steel plates. I hung old clothes in it and that quietened it down, for a while. But it was the best option I had tried to date, just loud, and I've got many neighbours.
Pros - Will stop everything. Will last for ever if looked after. Easy to collect used pellets incase you should ever want to melt them down and cast your own one day.
Cons - Expensive. Loud and makes a mess. Heavy to cart around. Will rust in rain, have to bring it in every time after shooting.

I searched youtube for ideas and found this rubber mulch one, and it is the BOMB!

All you need is a plastic storage bin. I got some from miter 10 for $9.98 each.

Some rubber mulch, I searched the net, then bunnings and miter 10, and eventually found a tyre recycling place literally 2 min drive from my house. They sell their mulched rubber by the cubic meter. I only needed a little, so they gave it to me for free.

A sharp knife/hobby knife, hack saw.

Some packing tape and cardboard. Cerial boxes work fine.

Fill the plastic storage crate with rubber mulch. Try compress it a little as you are filling it, as it will settle over time if you dont.

Cut out a rectangle shape in the plastic lid, a little bigger then an A4 paper.
Cut out a piece of cardboard that covers the hole in the lid and tape it over the hole to keep the rubber mulch in.
Stand it on one edge, tape an A4 paper target onto the cardboard and shoot in silence till your hearts content!

The depth of the plastic storage container will dictate how much FPE it will stop. Mine are about 30cm deep and I have never had a problem with any air rifle, pellets or slugs, up to 50FPE .25 slugs.
You could also put a plank of wood in the bottom of the crate before you add the rubber mulch if you wanted to, for a bit of extra stopping power.
I did this with a little mini pellet trap I made for stopping pellets when I shoot in my lounge at 5 or 10 yards.
These pellet traps work like a dream.

Pros - Very cheep. Easy DIY. Will last for years. Very quiet. Portable. No mess. Stops every pellet and slug I've tried, no problem.
Cons- you will need to sift through it if you want the used pellets back (I dont). Cardboard can get wet if left outside, could maybe use coreflute?

Walk quietly, but carry a big stick.

Plastic tote.

Fill with rubber mulch.

Cut a hole in the lid and tape cardboard over it.
Stand up on edge, add a paper target and shoot 👍🏻

I use bigger ones for out to 80yards, and the mini one for shooting in the lounge at home.

After each shooting session I usually just tape over the holes in the cardboard to keep the rubber mulch inside.
When the cardboard gets too shot out, just replace it.

Got the same 22lr rated one, although it catches the pellet in a recessed area, I put a piece of thick ply fitted to the back of the target steel, glued on with, no more nails, takes some of the ring out of it. Thick sheet foam rubber,  jammed into the trap & I staple A4 targets to the foam. All helps, still heavy & louder than the sound of the air rifle, but it is safe.

My favorite pellet trap is the cheepo one I brought at gun city. Air rifle blew the back out pretty fast. Redid it with side of washing machine tin in few of a layers they took a hammering. Then stuffed it with Dacron from a sleeping bag. Pellets don't get to the back wall now. Mounted on a batten, can lean it on whatever, nail batton to stuff, make it higher or lower by lean angle. (Actual target rearly is sitting strait up and down). Just keep putting targets on top,or a cardboard backing. Usually stick 4 1inch targets around main target.
But this ranks up there too.

Pellets hit back plate causing it swing up. Pellets tend to fall at back of target
Washers are 3/4 inch hole and 1 1/2 inch I think. Sound tells you how close you are to bull. Flap lifts dead on, loud. Nick the washer diffent sound quieter and doesn't lift anywhere as much. Hit the washer be behind the wood different to again. Hit wood different again. Face needs to be replaced after a while. If ya missing the bull that is!

Bent nails in front are flap stops. For close range.

Inch thick rubber, scored from the range, side off cuts from replacing the bullet traps. Just staple A4 target s onto. Works well.
