Well not getting any better grouping.
Had a couple of promising groups but they opened up with a few staggering sideway movements, random drops.
Guessing seals, barrel locks tight.
Open sights. Think I'll sort out the stock contact so it's even. Then toy with the gel idea. Seals and sight over the next month or so and it should stabilises. Or so the theory goes.
What sort of group sizing are ppl achieving at the moment.
I definitely wouldn't call mine head shot accuracy at ten meters, consistent.

I've finished modifying the fixed steady I had lying around to fit my little old Chinese lathe.  So I now have what I need to crown the barrel and got it set up in the 4-jaw tonight.  Will fit it in the steady tomorrow and centre it on the bore then mage the cut.  I'm thinking I might square up the breech block while I'm at it, but as yet undecided.  I might have to do a bit of maths first and figure out how much needs to come off.

Interesting setup there. Does the taped down cocking arm miss the carriage when spinning? What if you take the barrel out of the block like BillB did?

I did notice on mine that the slot cut in the main body where the breech block rotates into had a bad edge, and removing it with a file was fine for that, but I am weary of changing the mating surfaces that could cause the barrel to aim up, so to speak. The main thing would be that it's a reliable lock up and that the breech seal seals against comp tube.

But that's what has been great about this thread is that everyone is just doing what they want to do and enjoying it.

I'd love to know what it actually costs air chief to make these, and when I look at them, it's really only a matter of tightening up clearances and slightly more accurate machining that will make these much better quality. It's almost as if they used worn out machinery and tooling to get the last bit of revenue from them before overhaul.

Very very promising, that's still using the air chief flat tips and haven't started pellet picking

Great work Billbob, putting a scope on the barrel gets rid of the variance in the breech each time you close it against the factory seal which causes the scatter if its mounted on the dovetail - as I found out.

I made a bit more progress tonight now that the steady is finished (not really, it's not quite central which I didn't realize is fairly critical so some adjustment is still required), managed to crown the barrel and followed Kruza's advice to polish the piston shaft which is coated and pitted from the factory.  Made up a polishing tool from a piece of scrap stainless tube with a length of 400 wet & dry paper rolled up inside it and secured with masking tape on a bit of it left protruding.  Ran it in the lathe and moved the shaft back and forth inside it whilst rotating the piston with a bit of pressure applied.  The coating is quite hard and I used about 4 pieces of paper before it was cleaned back to bare steel and then finished it off with some 1200 grit.  The difference this makes to the travel of the plastic spring guide is very pleasing - definitely worth the effort.

I have a day off work tomorrow so hope to get the thing finished and back together with some test shots - fingers crossed!

For some reason I'm not able to upload any images tonight so I'll try again tomorrow.

Paul, there was just enough clearance to the bed and I moved the carriage to the far end to do the crowning.  I'm not entirely happy with how it went, but after trying to press the barrel retaining pin out and not managing to budge it I gave that idea away and carried on with my original plan.  I'm trying not to mark it up too much even if though it's of no great value.  Just me.
