Hi Brian. Welcome aboard. Think it will be a two way thing. Always keen to see how the English are doing it too. That 12fpe rule makes for some pretty awsome shooters.
So what are shooting? Do you get out for much hunting. Keen to here some of you experiance and what the scene is like over there at moment. As for what it's like here fire away with the things you are curious about, be someone on site who can fill ya in. |

Hello Brian,
Yes ask Kruzaroad says, we often tip our hats to you UK shooters using sub 12 f/lbs or are you using FAL versions? Do you take videos of your shooting for YouTube? If you do let us know and we can follow you on there too. |

Hi Guys thanks for the welcome, i am a keen hunter and if its not raining
i get out as often as possible, we have a huge grey squirrel problem these are not native and are wiping out our native red squirrels which are protected,i i shoot lots of these for hunting i use a multi shot PCP incase a follow up shot is needed on greys i use .177 or .22 cal , we put out peanut feeders to bring them out and make it easier to shoot them from a hide at a range of18-25 yds, for normal hunting i keep my shooting range to 40 yrds i ambush shoot so if rabbit shooting i find the warrens and set up an ambush point to shoot them as they feed,, i also do a lot of Night Vision shooting and own several NV scopes, i do not film or take pics of prey its a personal thing about respect. i understand about your feral cat problem and if in NZ or Oz would have no problem in shooting them.!! atb brian

Those squirrel look like the perfect size air rifle target.
We have the same issue with non native spiecies. Possums be the closest looking to a squirrel, yet much heavier, bigger, tough as nails not flighty or particually fast in trees. Usually night shot. Catch the eye shine with torch and biggest issue is getting a clear shot. They don't move quite often, just sit there looking at you. Rabbits and hares plenty of here. I tend to walk around shooting them, but having said that watching a few of the videos of nz shooters with nv and pcp sitting still and shooting, I'm probly doing it the wrong way as they have a much higher kill rate than me stalking around with a red light. We have a huge problem with pest birds here. Most brought out from England in the early days of settlement. Starlings, sparrows, finches of various sorts, black birds also mynas, magpies, crows to name a few. Also have quail, pheasant but they are game birds and have seasons. Also various Australian birds that are escaped pets. Rosella, sulfur crested cockatoo, gallahs, and even things like kukabura in certain areas. Rats which I'm just getting into shooting and would be keen to hear your tactics for them as I'm not having great success yet. Cats, ferrets etc very cunning creatures. I've shot a few cats but once they become aware of you hunting them I use traps as main way of catching them and air rifle if happen to see them. Ferrets never managed to shoot one. Hardest of creatures to find and have a very elusive looping movement and I find very hard to shoot on the move. Couple guys here have taken wallaby (another aussie import) goat with air rifles. I've only shot them with 22lr so can't comment on hunting them with air rifle but hopefully they will fill you in on that. Our air gun market, for makes and brands and supplies would be absolutely abysmal compared to England. We don't have the 12fpe law so springers and pump air rifles can get to a reasonable fpe, but any pcp rifle requires a fal. Don't need a fal for a Pcp pistol though from what I understand. Go figure. |

Hi KR, thanks for the interesting reply.
air pistols in England are to be under only allowed to be under 6fpe so its not on for game shooting, i am only into airrifles my main ones being a HW100.177cal a Daystate huntsman in.20 cal a turkish made Reximex Accura pcp in .22cal, my springers aHW-99 in.22cal , a hw-35 in .22cal , a Cometa -400 USC b/b in .25 cal, Rats i shoot a lot mostly on farms, stables, house owners with chickens, i bait them with tis of cheap fish based cat food i bash holes in the tin with a hammer and 6 inch nail fill the can with water roll it around the bait area leave it for the rats to lick at shoot in the dark with Pard-007 NV addon NV scope ,another trick is to smear chocolate spread onto bricks/ pieces of wood where the rats have to stop and lick it off, its advisable to bait them like this for a week or two to get used to this and think its safe , as we know rats are not stupid , Night vision is the way to or a gun mounted torch but the rats soon will cotton on. its great to post for you guys and to learn what you airgunners get up to. happy shooting---atb Brian

G'day Brian, (std Kiwi welcome)
Nice to have you here. I was in the UK in 2019 and was amazed at the selection of airguns you have available compared to us. I haven't been onto any rat shooting, but would like to when the opportunity arises. I have done a bit of rabbit shooting and really appreciate seeing sub 12 shooters getting results. Paul. |

Hey Brian,
I've just moved to NZ from the UK and joined this forum as I'm struggling to decide on a non pcp rifle to buy. I wish the law on them here was more nuanced, seems crazy to me that all pcp's require a firearms certificate, while very powerful springers are not restricted. I'd be happy to buy a sub 12ft/lb pcp rather than a 20ft/lb springer. I guess I just need to get a FAL asap! Keep on top of those grey squirrels for me, I was working as a Ranger in Northumberland for 10 years controlling them but it was a never ending battle. Shot a few possums here but it is quite different style of hunting. All the best, Elliot |
