My TX is HP so will need something strong. I'm looking to get something decent that I won't want to upgrade in a hurry.
I've currently got a Gamo 4x32 on it...I've only just bought the rifle and borrowed the scope from a friend just to get shooting. Have so far done really well shooting paper target at the clubs considering current optics!
My pockets are not deep enough for a march pinkMIST. However, I was considering a Nikko Diamond and have seen that many are using these and Sightron SIII 10-50x60 at the WFT Champs. My concern is that my TX is pushing out 15.6fpe and the guys at the worlds are probably tuned to 12fpe?? Not sure if they will handle the recoil of mine. I do like the Optisan viper 8-32x60 too...your thoughts? |

Some of the advice that came from Sunday at NHAGC was to avoid chinese glass and get something that won't "white out" with the sun in front. This time of year the sun is really low and the NHAGC range basically faces north so even a sunshade won't help bad glass.
I did have a look through a big nikko and found you really have to have your eye in just the right spot on full mag or else you lose picture. This is most likely same for all high power scopes I guess. |

youre welcome to have a look through mine, I havent regretted putting it on my TX, nice glass .
prior to the viper I was using a leapers 8-32x, so no change in magnification capabilities, but a move to better quality glass was certainly notable. you could try a few things to help with white out, many different views on this. I used with good effect some thin upholstery carpet, the no backing stretchable kind, and glued that around the inside of the sunshade. This helped to stop light being reflected off the inside of the tube and onto the lens, worked for me. sometimes rather than thinking outside of the square, you just need to get rid of the square altogether :) The optisan has no issues with HP springers, but for what they cost I reckon theres other scopes that are well comparable, maybe better - if you look secondhand. dropping the tx's power will give you a very enjoyable Springer to shoot, and reduce recoil. Changing parts inside will drop noise and vibration (spring guide, top hat, etc, in delrin ratger than metal - talk to Nunga) Talk to people, ask around, you never know what bargains are lurking in the shadows :)

Have found some club members with spares they may sell. I'm going to check a few out thurs night at local club. What's the general opinion on Hawke sidewinder30 8-32? Just wonder whether I'll find it to be a "good starter" but soon drooling over something better or are they reasonably capable? I kinda just wanna put something on there that will get me going, more-so than what I currently have and then take the time to choose what I really want, what I really really want :) Am probably going to get something 8-32x so leapers, hawke, optisan... Optisan seems a good choice but hard to find. leapers and hawke are plentiful. Really appreciate all the feedback guys, I've been mulling this over for 2 weeks now so getting close to a decision. It was never this difficult for all my other rifle types!!

Nothing wrong with Hawke, and yes, optisan arent easy to come by in NZ :)
Id rate the sidewinder 30 above the leapers, but alot of it will come down to budget and personal preference. Falcon T50 and T35 are good choices as well, theres a t50 for sake in Hamilton for $600 from memory...... |

Hawke 32x is fine and versatile for starting out. I imagine in combination with the TX it'll be a while before the skill of the shooter moves past the kit, springers being notoriously difficult to shoot well consistently.
Whether it's worth it depends on how much they want for it. :) |

By the way - you said you've done other shooting so you might be interested to know 1 standard mildot @ 34.3x mag ~ 1MOA. That's part of the reason I like to stick around mid 30's for my magnification. Makes estimating easy.

Totally agree! I'd say my 20yrs with rimfire has given me a pretty good skill base and have made some adaptations already since starting with springers. Still much more to learn though and I can't wait to get out there with something decent to look through. My first week at airgun club I nailed the bull with 5 shots prone freehand with a borrowed hw97k. It was that moment I became hooked and am looking forward to the many challenging aspects of springers and FT.
