I would definately remove the old grease and then Moly grease the spring... not heaps but enough to allow smooth metal on metal contact.

Just some thoughts... the twang sound is generated right next to you ear when firing. If you stand away from the rifle (have someone else fire it) it isn't that loud... I have found springs quiter than thump of nitro-pistons but that may be subjective.

If it makes a twack sound the spring is broken... so twang is good.Big smile

Vortex and other make after-market nylon spring guide kits, including HW80s. I have one to fit to my TX200 but I haven't bothered since its twang doesn't scare the bunnies.

Obviously they ship to NZ but not sure wehat that would cost presently.

I have an old well used HW80 .22 that I believe performs approximately to spec at 17.42 foot pounds on H&N FTTs at 14.66 gr leaving the muzzle at 732 fps.

I have not yet fitted the .177 barrel I have but that could be interesting...

It is the most noisy twangy rifle I have ever used but it shoots straighter than most.
Diana Model 52 .177 at 16.67 foot pounds on H&N Barracuda 10.65 gr 840 fps, for example has similar recoil but much less twang - the HW lets your ears know there is heavy stuff moving inside it when you shoot it. I'm not sure there is much difference at all with recoil/feel between the two but the sound from the HW may be making me feel and think it has more recoil...but I think that could be my subjective impression based on what my ears tell me.

My general understanding is tuning reduces that twang but has minimum effect on accuracy. Except an expert can tune better than that but unless you get lucky, expertise is required.

Consensus seems to be they are great rifles - and I agree - but a little over-cooked in power so not quite as accurate as other HWs.

I got tbt kit.
They just run smoother and quieter.
The bottom guide and slip washer make a difference and the tolerance of the guides is way tighter inside the spring.
Looking at the hw80 exploded view its the same as the hw97, the metal spring pushes into the metal piston an sits metal to metal. Like have a amplifier for the spring resonation.
There are 25mm and 26mm pistons for weihrauch depending on the year, so if you go kit be aware of that.
You can find the online what years and models ran what piston.
I wont go back to standard set up. ( Unless spring breaks, then the replacement weihrauch spring I got as a replacement spring for orginal spring which broke will go in till get another kit)
I have nothing bad to say about the kit. Arrived way fast too.

I looked at hw80 exploded diagram. It runs the same set up as the hw97.
The metal spring going into the metal piston, metal on metal. We all know how ringy metal on metal is. It has the whole spring tube to fire sound back down.
Its an echo chamber for spring resonation.
Put your phone, speaker first, into a cup, put on some sounds you'll see what I mean.
Tbt kit with a bottom guide and slip washer stop that metal on metal and allow the spring to turn as its cocked or fired.
Guides are tighter too.
No extra power no loss of accuracy but quieter, and a hell of a lot smoother cycle.
I'll be using kits from now on.
