So we are overrun with rabbits which means in a couple of months we will be wading through them…

I haven’t owned a gun in over 30 years…. In fact Don’t think I have looked through a scope since I started wearing glasses….(does that make a difference??)

So I had my mind made up on the gen 3 GAMO Magnum I have searched and searched and haven’t found a bad review but join a couple of FB groups and forums and nobody likes GAMO…. So is it a case of nobody liked Hyundai or Kia 10 years ago and now … move over ford or do GAMO genuinely pay the 60000 people who post videos to talk sh*t about their gun🤷‍♂️

I’ve got $800 so what else can I go buy? And being in New Plymouth it’s a pain in the arse we have zero shops other than Hunting & Fishing would you buy anything off this list🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

https://www.huntingandfishing.co.nz/hunting/slug-air-soft-sling/air-rifles?

I don’t intend to become a full time air gun fanatic ( but you never know) I just need to protect our business from the rabbit holes…

Magnum Sports (06 765 7248) in Stratford are good to deal with, Steve.

And my brief thoughts on your next purchase are:
  • Once you start air-gunning again you'll love it and will want to shoot more!  Smile
  • Therefore, get a good quality rifle now and find the right pellet for your new rifle's barrel.
  • If its a Springer, learn the Artillery Hold and Follow Through techniques to shoot well - there are good Youtube videos on these excellent techniques.
  • Spend that little bit more now and buy a Weihrauch HW50, HW77HW80, HW95, HW97 or HW98 - you'll not regret it!
  • Put a 4-16 Hawke or Element Scope on it using Sportsmatch Rings.
  • Enjoy!  LOL
Yes, this will cost you more BUT I don't think you'll regret it.

Many people start off buying cheap or poor quality air rifles which are not accurate and then they are disappointed, so they give up and shove the rifle in the cupboard, never to be used again - or sell 'em on TradeMe!  Try counting the number of second-hand Gamo's on TradeMe today!  Wink

Ron Young's Airguns in Auckland are also superb to deal with - they can courier to your local dealer for collection too.

Unfortunately I'm too far from the excellent Air Rifle Club in Eltham but I also recommend you ask them if they can help you - they have some real experts there who I'm sure would love to show you all the right techniques for shooting Springers and give you better advice than I can provide.

If ever you're over Feilding way, you are most welcome to pop in and try my Springers here.

Last recommendation:  Buy a good quality rifle right from the start!  Big smile

Agree with all of this ^

Magnum sports are fantastic and have a good range, its a must stop shop for me any time I am over that way.

In terms of Gamo.... Yes they pay people to say good things and the marketing department is very "creative". Some older Gamos (mainly the ones made by Umarex or BSA and just labelled Gamo) were actually pretty good, and some of the older stuff that they did actually make like the 440 and CFX were OK but in the last 10 years or so the materials they use and the QC has gone down hill terribly. Plastic absolutely does not belong in wear areas where a tight tolerance is required for accuracy like in the breech block or scope mounting rails etc!!  This along with over hyped power claims and sky high prices make them an absolute joke now, I am sure there is a place in the market for them but sitting at not far off the cost of something that is actually decent is just having a laugh. I wouldn't have beef with something like the G Magnum Whisper if they were selling for $199 but at $899 you are much better off with something German made or a nice Cometa etc.

It would be fascinating to do a long term test with something like the G Magnum Whisper vs an Air Arms by putting 3000 pellets through each and do a 10 shot group and chrony string every 500 rounds to see how they compare. And 3000 pellets may sound overboard but that's only 6 tins of pellets and once you get into it that will become your yearly reality.

Hey, dont be so hard on the poor bunnies, we love Bunnies here.
The more bunnies around the better

And dont be so hard on the poor gamos either, they are not that bad.
They're not that good either, but you could do a lot worse than a gamo!
I have ended up with two gamos which are both suprisingly good, it is only their triggers that let them down.
And dont fall for their 1100fps marketing BS. If you want an accurate air rifle 1100fps is no where near where you want to be.

Having said that though, I would agree with Myson and Mintie. If you really do have that many bunnies hopping around then do your self a favour and start off your "adult airgunning career" with a decent air rifle.
A cheap rifle with a (horror of all horrors) cheap scope, is going to give you countless hours of ENDLESS FRUSTRATION, a bunch of wounded bunnies, and probably leave you mumbling and muttering about air rifles, barn doors and wastes of time and money.
But a good quality rifle and a good scope, with good pellets and good shooting technique (research the artillary hold as Myson mentioned) will give you hours, no, years of endless pleasure and the satisfaction of time after time knocking over those poor little cute hoppies.

There are a few decent breakbarrels out there worth spending some money on. Have a look through the reviews section of this forum for some good reviews by members like Mercs.
Any Weihrauch is worth spending money on and owning
If you are prepared to spend a bit more then a break barrel, then you are looking at under levers or side levers.
Personally I'd look for a decent second hand underlever or side lever to start with.

Gamo CFX and CFR's come up on trade me fairly regulary, you could probably pick one up for around 3 or 4 hundered. Above that are the Dianas, 48, 52 and 54. I doubt you'd be lucky enough to find a 56 (I did, but it took a lot of patience )
If you want a Big Boy air rifle your looking for a HW77 or a HW97 (Weihrauch) or a TX200 or a Pro sport (AirArms). Those are the cream of the crop! One day, when I'm big, I'll have a HW97.
I'd avoid the Stoger underlever, in theory it should be ok, but personally I'd rather put the money towards one of the rifles I've mentioned above.

Alternately, if you've got a garden you could invite some of us to come camping for a few days in your garden and we could put a sizable dent into your hopper population
Walk quietly, but carry a big stick.

Agree totally but I hate to get ripped off and the price NZ shops are charging for Weirauchd is criminal… honestly if I put 50 pellets into zeroing and another 200 into thumper that’s probably my aurgunning over…. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
