So we are overrun with rabbits which means in a couple of months we will be wading through them…
I haven’t owned a gun in over 30 years…. In fact Don’t think I have looked through a scope since I started wearing glasses….(does that make a difference??) So I had my mind made up on the gen 3 GAMO Magnum I have searched and searched and haven’t found a bad review but join a couple of FB groups and forums and nobody likes GAMO…. So is it a case of nobody liked Hyundai or Kia 10 years ago and now … move over ford or do GAMO genuinely pay the 60000 people who post videos to talk sh*t about their gun🤷♂️ I’ve got $800 so what else can I go buy? And being in New Plymouth it’s a pain in the arse we have zero shops other than Hunting & Fishing would you buy anything off this list🤷♂️🤷♂️ https://www.huntingandfishing.co.nz/hunting/slug-air-soft-sling/air-rifles? I don’t intend to become a full time air gun fanatic ( but you never know) I just need to protect our business from the rabbit holes… |

Magnum Sports (06 765 7248) in Stratford are good to deal with, Steve.
And my brief thoughts on your next purchase are:
Many people start off buying cheap or poor quality air rifles which are not accurate and then they are disappointed, so they give up and shove the rifle in the cupboard, never to be used again - or sell 'em on TradeMe! Try counting the number of second-hand Gamo's on TradeMe today! ![]() Ron Young's Airguns in Auckland are also superb to deal with - they can courier to your local dealer for collection too. Unfortunately I'm too far from the excellent Air Rifle Club in Eltham but I also recommend you ask them if they can help you - they have some real experts there who I'm sure would love to show you all the right techniques for shooting Springers and give you better advice than I can provide. If ever you're over Feilding way, you are most welcome to pop in and try my Springers here. Last recommendation: Buy a good quality rifle right from the start! ![]() |

Agree with all of this ^
Magnum sports are fantastic and have a good range, its a must stop shop for me any time I am over that way. In terms of Gamo.... Yes they pay people to say good things and the marketing department is very "creative". Some older Gamos (mainly the ones made by Umarex or BSA and just labelled Gamo) were actually pretty good, and some of the older stuff that they did actually make like the 440 and CFX were OK but in the last 10 years or so the materials they use and the QC has gone down hill terribly. Plastic absolutely does not belong in wear areas where a tight tolerance is required for accuracy like in the breech block or scope mounting rails etc!! This along with over hyped power claims and sky high prices make them an absolute joke now, I am sure there is a place in the market for them but sitting at not far off the cost of something that is actually decent is just having a laugh. I wouldn't have beef with something like the G Magnum Whisper if they were selling for $199 but at $899 you are much better off with something German made or a nice Cometa etc. It would be fascinating to do a long term test with something like the G Magnum Whisper vs an Air Arms by putting 3000 pellets through each and do a 10 shot group and chrony string every 500 rounds to see how they compare. And 3000 pellets may sound overboard but that's only 6 tins of pellets and once you get into it that will become your yearly reality.
