If you have the piece of barrel and a grinder could cut and measure.
It strikes me as weird. Like they just put a choke half way round. It makes no sense to me, as with a full choke and pushing you would expect it to center as it went through. But that definitely is not centered and I can't see the pellet pushing through that easy if it was if it was angeled. It pushed through easily Might connect the air hose up tomorrow and have a look. |

Hi Kruza that is some damage to the pellet head. All rather interesting. The choke section definitely needs assistance but I did not have much luck finding any measurable difference in head size, the tail flare was always damaged pushing it through. No discernible deformation on RWS pellets I was using but I could see slight markings from the rifling groves. AI search came up with a choke option of 20 thou and very difficult to find manufacturers reference. James from All About Airguns, fires a pellet into a large bucket of water then inspects. The metal loss or deformation through the choke was quite significant.

i can't for the life me find my vernia.
Wanted to measure how much choke tightened. So best could come up with. Sig dagger pellets pushed through air chief barrel. Size difference, before and after. ![]() But a more interesting resault, which i repeated with a few pellets, to make sure it wasn't me, is the choke is only contacting part of the head. (All of the skirt but shallower where the head has no contact.) ![]() Im assuming this isn't just my barrel. Anyway something to look at for anyone still tinkering away. |

My Air Chief had a 73 fps improvement with choke removed.
That will account for improved accuracy.

Hi Kruza, yes I recall pushing several pellets through to confirm the barrel was choked within the cut-off.
I have a record of the as new Chrono test at 457 fps so can do a comparison. From my notes: 20 practice shots to ensure barrel was coated with copper from FTT Power pellets.
Outdoors and conditions were excellent. Full length barrel POA was the top bull with 86mm OD spread over the target. Choke removed POA was the lower bull with 25mm OD and 50mm high. |

Id been keen mercs.
Be interesting to see if it opens up. The barrel cut drop the fpe much? Quite funny its more accurate with the barrel cut. Wonder if the choke is the prob. Was that cut off in the process? |

85mm removed from barrel of Air Chief Junior.
It was heading for scrap when I tried this. Originally I had 45mmOD at 10 metres with a red dot. This target was at 7 metres using fixed sights. The front sight was just pushed back on for lower target. I Have since drilled the foresight mounting deeper and press fit back into place with no spline. I can revisit at 10 metres with red dot if anyone is interested.

I cut the choke off the end of my barrel and re-crowned it but that made no difference at all. Mercs cut his barrel in half and grouping improved dramatically. He might chirp in with details.

I.ve got a sneaking feeling that the trigger adjustment is just a flasher home made version of the screw i put in the air chief to hold the sear closer to the release point. Drilled a hole right about there through the trigger guard to do it.

Direct trigger sounds very very dodgy in itself but is likely just bad English...
I'm OK with Gamos but those rifles make Gamos seem like Sakos. |
