Finally, after quite a few false starts, I have some semi-decent results to show along with a pic of the gun in its current and now final form. I won't bother with any more mods as I'm getting reasonable groups - I just need a bit more practice. I did machine up a floating end cap out of some acrylic rod sitting on two rubber docking rings but it made things slightly worse and was horrible to cock. So I've ended up fitting a short piece of silicon tube pushed over the original front sight cap retaining ribs. It's mainly for looks and cocking, but it may also be damping out some vibration. The groups below were all shot at 10 metres with selected JSB Exact pellets in the head diameter range of 4.42 - 4.44 mm. I was standing using the triangulated arms/rigid hold method (link below), with my front hand resting on a padded tripod. I'll spend a bit more time with pellet selection and do some more shooting to see if I can improve on these results. My next project gun has arrived so I'll start playing with that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScBqBcxDlKQ |

(Copied across from my pellet variance post as it's relevant to the discussion here). Started having a sort through the tin of 4.52 JSB 'Exacts' tonight
dividing them into 4.44 and under on one side and 4.46 and larger on the
other (the verniers are accurate to .02mm). I haven't made a lot of
progress as you can see but the ratio is about 2:1. The smallest is
4.42 and the largest 4.48 - a long way off the 4.52 stated on the tin
regardless. To further demonstrate my thinking
re the Air Chief challenge gun, a pic of a 4.42 JSB sitting nicely
inside the barrel and another of a 4.52 Sig that won't enter without
being forced in. To my way of thinking the 4.42 is going to shoot
straighter in this gun than the 4.52. |

Well don't see improvement.
Last group shot with air chief target. (bottom right unmarked is a exact heavy. flyer from worse group lower down.) This group 50mm x 30mm. This time I've got to take a lot more blame for spread. Had a horrible time with the rear blade blurring/turning into 4 dots for some reason. (older age I suspect) At this stage that's it till I can be bothered drilling picatinny rail to fit. Better get more accurate results before alter stock. But at moment I'm off to twack a Starling or mynar 2 with 1322. |

If those air chief pellets are the ones Iโm thinking of they are made by H&N.
Iโve tested them at 10m And they are good ๐๐ป Iโll actually test them at 20 tomorrow, seeing as I can now shoot 20m, under the boatโฆ ๐๐๐ |

So beat another aluminium can and made a shim for the trigger block/top hat seat.
Its pretty shocking that I could use a can and get complete wrap around. Slid in nicely has made it tight and centered. Threw in pic of the angled seal. The felt must have compressed somewhat and allowed it to sit to low. Pulled it out and got a Oring put it between 2 washers and compressed it in vice. Replaced the felt with it. Seal sits proud now so should seal much better. Think will finish putting back together tomorrow and do a few test shots with the air chief pellets before doing the gel thing. If that don't work the stock will be stuffed. Brought a couple bolts to replace the stock sight bolts so can drill out picatinny rail and mount dot sight to barrel. All fun and games. |

Measured both breach and muzzle.
Didn't appear choked. Got some air chief target pellets. Guy at shop said its what the gun club uses, so must be good pellets. I laughed. Still they may well be. No shim metal I could find so brought another v and will make a more refined verson. Brought a collapsible bucket for the plastic base support. Has two types in it. Both quite rigid but still have some form of flex. Thin. |

In theory the skirt should balloon out with the air pressure and fit anyway, but if the head is loose then it will come out randomly after bouncing around down the barrel, and if head too tight and it'll suffer too. This why the UK shooters buy sample batches of pellets and if they work well, they buy those batches in bulk.
So you gotta wonder if these cheap barrels are the same size all the way too.

OK, so does my theory make sense then? If the skirt is larger then it will cause the pellet to spin, but if the head is larger what happens? Perhaps that's normal - I have no idea.

4.40mm on barrel diameter on lands.
Didn't want to put vernier edge into groove in case damaged. |
