Been thinking bout this one for while,made lot stocks over the years,some using laminated walnut and other woods etc,allso made couple using ply,most proper laminated blanks ore made in thin layers the opposite way to ply,you can get same effect by stacking ply  n gluing,get same effect as proper laminated
 stock blanks,looks nicer than ply,but bit mor trouble to make up blank,tho i think end result worth it

Yes I remember you telling me that once, but I'm not as brave as you. There is a 35mm core box bit available with 1/2 in shank, and Ryobi have a router that will handle it. The last stock I did I ended up bedding the action, which worked well I thought. This also eliminated the need to get the inlet perfect. Pauly5. I had a look at corebox bits to do the inletting of the stock. Biggest I could find was 12.5 mms. I suppose you could get one made but costly. 36 mms is a big bit and would have to be 1/2 inch shank. And need a grunty router and take. a few cuts.
I have used ordinary high carbon steel spade bits and cut the spur off leaving just a rounded peg to act as a guide in a sawcut to the right depth and ground the bit round. It works but the shank is only 6mm so you get a bit of chatter and the finish needs sanding. Gentle light cuts because you don't want to bend the shank at 1000s rpm. 
I was not really very happy doing it. Gloves goggles face mask. Safer with a proper 1/2 inch shank bit.

Made a start on the in-letting tonight. Cable tied the vacuum to the router and it works quite well.

Well someone gave me a piece of marine ply, just enough for one blank, so I started on a new stock for my 97. Suitably inspired by a build forwarded onto me by JS, I am taking a more calculated approach to this one. This stock will be more of a target style for FT, but I am looking forward to getting creative and making a mess.



Laminating and roughing out the design.

Check out laminated stock in the technical section. Me and another guy made some stocks a while ago.

Yeah it looks to be in NZD with free shipping. Not cheap at all, but there look to be some familiar colours in there, so wouldnt be surprised if they are used by some of the big names - AA, HW etc
But marine ply will probably get an excellent result so do post some pics of the progress.
