Author: kruzaroad
Subject: 1298
Posted: 21 Dec 2025 at 11:30am

Heres using claude ai to see what resaults would get

Im looking for any info i can find on an obscure air rifle. Its the marksman deluxe #1780
I think its from the late 1970's to early 1980's

12:11

1 step
Marksman 1780 specifications history
10 results
Marksman 1740 air rifle relationship 1780
10 results

Good news - I found some information on your Marksman Deluxe #1780! You're correct that it's from that era. Here's what I learned:

Basic Specifications:

.177 caliber, break barrel, spring piston design with approximately 450 FPS velocity
Blue Book of Gun Values
Single shot version of the Model 1740
Blue Book of Gun Values
Made in the USA with barrel speed rated at 450-500 FPS
PicClick
Manufacturing Details:

Model markings show "1780 .177 cal Huntington Beach USA" with patent number 3-908-626
SpudFiles
Marksman was previously located in Huntington Beach, CA until 2010
Blue Book of Gun Values
, which matches the era you're thinking of
Condition & Usage Notes:

The safety button must be fully cocked to lock in place; otherwise it may stay at half position
PicClick
eBay
Users report these rifles shoot smoothly due to their small spring and piston design
SpudFiles
Current Status:

These are considered hard-to-find air rifles
PicClick
Parts are available through specialty dealers like JG Airguns
This appears to be a relatively basic but well-made American air rifle from Marksman's lineup. It's definitely obscure these days, which probably explains why information is scarce!

Are there any exploded views of it on line

12:17

2 steps

"Marksman 1780" manual PDF parts diagram
0 results

JG Airguns Marksman 1780 parts schematic
10 results

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any publicly available exploded view diagrams for the Marksman 1780 online. Here's what I found:

JG Airguns appears to be the best resource for Marksman parts and schematics. Their website has a dedicated section for the Model 1780
Blue Book of Gun Values
, and they mention having schematics available for various Marksman models. However, I couldn't directly access the actual diagram files.

What you can try:

Contact JG Airguns directly - They specifically list the 1780 on their site and mention providing schematics with parts orders. They note "NO PHONE SERVICE" but you could try reaching out through their website contact form.
Check if they'll send it - JG Airguns notes they're happy to supply printed copies of schematics if requested with parts orders
eBay
.
Firearms Guide - This is a paid subscription service that claims to have over 27,000 gun and airgun schematics. They might have the 1780, though there's no guarantee for such an obscure model.
Since the 1780 is essentially a single-shot version of the Model 1740, you might also search for 1740 diagrams as they would be very similar internally. The scarcity of documentation online reflects just how obscure this particular model is!

Can you search for 1740 exploded views

12:20

1 step

"Marksman 1740" parts diagram schematic
0 results

favicon

Fetched
Marksman owner's manual
vintageairgunsgallery.com

Unfortunately, I'm not finding any publicly available exploded view diagrams for the Marksman 1740 either. Here's what I discovered:

What I Found:

Vintage Airguns Gallery Forum has a Marksman owner's manual posted (from December 2023), but it appears to be a general operating manual rather than an exploded parts diagram.
JG Airguns lists the 1740 as a separate category on their site alongside the 1780, which suggests they likely have parts and possibly diagrams, but I couldn't access the actual content.
Similar models - There are exploded diagrams online for other Marksman models like the Beeman P17/Marksman 2004 pistol, but nothing for the 1740/1780 rifle series.
Forum discussions mention the 1790 model (which is in the same family), but those threads reference looking at pictures from previous repair attempts rather than official diagrams.
Your Best Options:

Since the 1780 is essentially a single-shot version of the 1740, and both are quite obscure, your best bet would be to:

Contact JG Airguns directly through their website (they note "NO PHONE SERVICE" but have a contact form)
Ask on forums like the Canadian Airgun Forum or Vintage Airguns Gallery where people have worked on these models
Check if the paid Firearms Guide subscription has it (though no guarantee for such an obscure model)
The lack of readily available diagrams online really highlights how rare these rifles are!

Claude is AI and can make mistakes. Please double-check cited sources.
Marksman deluxe #1780 air rifle information - Claude

Marksman #1780 Rifle : The pat number isnt a real patent...

    Author: kruzaroad
Subject: 1298
Posted: 21 Dec 2025 at 9:51am

The pat number isnt a real patent number. Cant be found in the usa patent data base or overseas. It is in the right number for air rifles of that era.

.chatgpt
Why This Happens on Airguns

Especially with budget or importer brands (like Marksman in the later 20th century):

Factories sometimes marked products with patent references even when the patent was never assigned or the number was internal/foreign.

Another possibility is that the patent label was intended to point to a different number, but the stamping was truncated or mis-stamped at the factory.

This is fairly common with older airguns and inexpensive sporting goods — they look like valid patent numbers, but they don’t actually match any issued U.S. patent records.

Final Answer (no fluff)

Model: Marksman 1780 Deluxe

Stock: Plastic faux wood (factory correct)

Receiver marking: Generic Marksman patent stamp

Country: US-market import

Most likely year made: circa 1980
(late 1970s to very early 1980s)

If you later get:

the full box end flap

or manual paperwork

we could tighten it to within a single year — but with what you’ve shown, 1980 is the best-supported answer.

Still probing anvenues with gpt. It doesn't do stuff automatically and you have to constantly send it down different paths that you or I would do naturally. It actually put the date range between 78 and 82.
I'll see if can drag up more info while its raining.
