Have a look for threads about pellet traps on this forum, there re a few good ones.
I know I posted one about my rubber mulch pellet traps. The most noise u hear is the pellet punching through the paper target.

I may just start plinking in my back garden. making sure I have a good pellet trap in place.

If the neighbours complain...well, I guess I'll see what happens.

You could join a TSNZ club and shoot the air rifle (instead of a rimfire .22).

I do that here in Richmond. I only shoot for the local club weekly competition (benchrest).

Wouldn't hurt to ask one of the local ChCh branches.

You will need to join and pay a fee, but it will be a lot cheaper and safer than driving all over the place looking for 'somewhere' to shoot.

Hi Nanaman,
Welcome to the forum.
To add on to what Pauly said, I'm not sure if hunting is your cup of tea, or if its something you'd like to get your son into, but you could always offer the farmer/land owner some free pest control, once you've got your rifles and scopes sorted out.
There might well be some farmers/land owners out there who would be happy to let you use their land in return for some pest control.

Gday Phil,

Welcome here. I'm not from ChCh so don't know anywhere there. But if I had to find places around where I live I think I would go for a drive in the country and try and find a quiet spot, or leave a note in a farmers letterbox introducing yourself and asking if there;s somewhere you can shoot, even if it's along a fenceline or under a tree belt.

It seems like a lot of effort, but it could start up a good relationship and having somewhere to shoot is valuable.

Hi all,

I've been given a couple of old 70's and 80's break barrel .177 rifles that I have pulled apart, replaced seals and springs, and generally restored back to working order.

Now I would very much like to find someplace where I can take my son, zero in the scopes (as best I can) and in general just enjoy the fruits of my labour.

As I'm a beginner I'm not too fused about being super accurate (that may change if I get more into it), and I'm sure these old ladies will not be able to compete with any of the new generation of rifles. So for now just looking for a bit of fun with my son.

Any recommendations of any airgun ranges?...much appreciated
