cheers, worked ok for the oversprung gamo.. though you had to break the barrel to slip it through then straighten it out to compress - wouldnt work with a fixed barrel - youd need to make a removable clamping piece... easier to grab a sash clamp!

G clamp is off to the right.. it was a knock up job, if I had more time I’d make the barrel stop adjustable and a block to clamp the cylinder down

I made a jig up a couple years back; wood base with half a G clamp bolted to it. Wood piece at the end to with a hole to hold the barrel in place and a wood piece along the side for the cylinder.
Worked well for the gun I was doing..

My five cents is go for a longer clamp around 1200mm with a screw. The screw allows you to make fine adjustments to add or remove compression. With a quick release it releases compression all in on go. A compressed spring has a fair amount of pre compression travel which can release violently and fire parts into dark corners of your garage..... 1200mm length will allow you to hold the barrel + action between the clamps.

Like Pauly said, a means of holding the rifle and stopping it from sliding out of the clamp when it's under compression is a good idea.

If there isn't much preload, you can sometimes open up without a clamp. But when I opened up my first 97 it had a long soft spring in it and there was about 80 mm of preload, so I needed the travel on a sash clamp to release the pressure or else I would have injured myself.

I use a Irwin quick grip.
Place a bit of wood on it to protect the spring. Takes up most of the slack and has a stopping pin at end of bar.
Travels a couple of inches till it hits it. Or the DIY one is quite do able. It's a good idea to be able to hold the gun as well so it doesn't slip off to the side.

Well the quick release ones will not be any use to you because the release very quickly.

They good for compressing the spring or gas piston.

I just used some timber. drill a hole in it and get some m12 threaded bar with some nuts and a couple of washers and you are good to go. way cheaper
